Minnesota Wild at Pittsburgh Penguins

The Wild (10-7-4) and Penguins (10-5-4) meet at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m. ET, and the game is available to be viewed or streamed on NHL Network.

These teams met on Oct. 30 in St. Paul, which is the capital of Minnesota, not Minneapolis, just in case you needed a reminder.

In that late October matchup at Grand Casino Arena, the Penguins won as moderate underdogs (+145) as the Under (6.5) cashed. Kirill Kaprizov opened the scoring midway through the first period, and Minnesota took it to the room with a 1-0 lead. Ryan Shea leveled the score early in the second period, and that's how things stayed into the third period.

In the final period, Bryan Rust scored at 6:29 with helpers to Shea and Kris Letang, while Ben Kindel added a power-play goal with a helper to Rust and Evgeni Malkin. Additionally, Anthony Mantha tossed in an empty-net goal to put a bow on the scoring. Letang was a hit machine as well, turning back the clock with four hits, while Parker Wotherspoon sacrificed his body for three blocked shots.

Filip Gustavsson did a decent job, allowing three goals on 33 shots, but Tristan Jarry allowed just the single goal on 27 shots. In Friday's game, we're expecting a matchup of Jesper Wallstedt (5-0-2, 2.20 GAA, .926 SV%, 2 SO) against Arturs Silovs (4-2-4, 2.44 GAA, .918 SV%, 1 SO) in a surprisingly good goaltending matchup.

Minnesota has posted a 3-4-1 mark on the road, and it streaks in with three consecutive victories, while picking up 11 out of a possible 12 points in the past six games, going 5-0-1. The Over cashed in a 4-3 shootout win over the Hurricanes on Wednesday, snapping a four-game Under run. The Wild have allowed two or fewer goals in seven of the past nine matchups, or just 1.8 GPG.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 4-0 victory over the Predators at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden behind rookie Sergei Murashov, as the prospect was needed with Jarry sidelined due to a lower-body injury. The Pens snapped an 0-1-2 stretch, while they are still 2-3-2 in the past seven games, and the Under has cashed in each of the past four games, averaging 2.0 GPG, while allowing 1.8 GPG in the same stretch. Pittsburgh returns home, where it is 5-2-1 this season.

Let's go with the Penguins to get the job done again, and we'll lean low based on the recent trends. If you can get in early on the Under 6.5 Total Goals, go a little heavier.

  • Penguins ML (+105 at Caesars, DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks)
  • Under 6.5 Goals (-125 at DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbooks)

Carolina Hurricanes at Winnipeg Jets

The Hurricanes (13-5-2) and Jets (12-7-0) meet at Canada Life Centre on Friday night at 8:00 p.m., and the game is available on ESPN+.

These teams split the regular-season series last season. Oddly enough, the March 9 matchup was the most recent game I attended in person, and it was the debut game for Logan Stankoven and Mark Jankowski. Stankoven scored a power-play goal in that game, and it stood up as the game-winning tally, while Jankowski scored a pair of goals.

This is the third stop on a four-game road trip for Carolina. It suffered a 4-3 shootout loss at Minnesota on Wednesday, and the Canes are 6-1-2 in the past nine games, while the Over is 6-2 in the previous eight matchups.

Winnipeg picked up a 5-2 win over the Blue Jackets behind backup goaltender Eric Comrie. The Jets are 3-1-0 in the past four games, and the Over has cashed in each of the matchups.

Pyotr Kochetkov (4-0-0, 1.69 GAA, .926 SV%, 1 SO) is expected to start for the visitors, while Connor Hellebuyck (8-6-0, 2.51 GAA, .913 SV%) is back in the crease for the home side.

While the trend for both sides is the Over, let's go low on the total with Kochetkov and Hellebuyck in between the pipes. We'll also side with the Jets at home straight up as short underdogs.
