2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Ortiz has been a first base prospect of note since his breakout season in 2023, but his stellar run at Triple-A to close 2025 marks the first time he's been at least 30 percent better than league average (133 wRC+) at an age-appropriate level. A 5-foot-10, 230-pound lefty hitter, Ortiz was promoted to the Pacific Coast League on Aug. 5 after logging 204 games at Double-A over the past two seasons. He had a 53.8 HardHit% and .316 BABIP while slashing .283/.388/.565, so it seems like his success in his first taste of Triple-A was earned. Ortiz is a flyball hitter whose contact and strikeout metrics have never been in the danger zone, but he hasn't produced enough against left-handed pitching (OPS below .700 each of the last two seasons) to realistically play every day at the bottom of the defensive spectrum. His realistic upside is capped as a strong-side platoon first baseman who doesn't hurt your batting average or on-base percentage while chipping in 20-plus home runs. He's on the 40-man roster and could push Jake Burger and/or Joc Pederson for playing time early this season if either veteran is struggling. Read Past Outlooks
Selected to 40-man roster
The Rangers selected Ortiz's contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.
Analysis
Ortiz's offensive production took off once he reached Triple-A and the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League in early August, as he slashed .283/.388/.565 with nine homers, 33 RBI and 32 runs scored in just 41 games at Round Rock. The 23-year-old will receive a 40-man roster spot and protection from the Rule 5 Draft following his late-season surge, and his ability to play first base and right field will boost his chances of reaching the majors at some point in 2026.
