DraftKings NHL: Sunday Picks

DraftKings NHL: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

SLATE PREVIEW

Two games are on Sunday's docket, starting with the classic rivalry between Washington and Pittsburgh at 3 p.m. EST and finishing with a heavyweight battle between Vegas and Colorado at 7 p.m .EST. Colorado will play its first game since Feb. 2. None of those teams are in the top-10 in terms xGF/60 at even strength. However, every team besides the Penguins rank top-10 in goals per game.

GOALIES

The goaltenders are in question, as Marc-Andre Fleury may be called upon to start for a second straight day if Robin Lehner (lower body) is unavailable. Ilya Samsonov has also cleared the NHL's COVID-19 protocol, but he may not be ready to return. Make sure your starting goalie is confirmed before the games start.

Vitek Vanecek, WAS at PIT ($7,400): Vanecek's been roughed up a bit lately, producing a 3.72 GAA over the past five games. He's already shown he's an effective NHL goaltender, however, and this matchup is more favorable than it seems, as the Penguins rank 20th in the league with 2.83 goals per game.

Marc-Andre Fleury, VGK vs. COL ($8,200): Fleury likely will start back-to-back games as long as Robin Lehner doesn't come back from injuries. He's been phenomenal at 36 years old, accruing a .933 save percentage and a 6-1-0 record. The Avalanche are certainly an elite offense, and they'll be getting Nathan MacKinnon (lower body) back. However, Gabriel Landeskog (COVID-19 protocol) is still questionable, so the Golden Knights at least have a slight edge Sunday.

VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS

Alex Tuch, VGK vs. COL ($4,100): Tuch has always had the talent -- he provided 20 goals and 52 points in the 2018-19 season -- but injuries derailed his 2019-20 season. The 24-year-old is finally putting things together again. He's red-hot in third-line terms, racking up nine points over the past nine games.

Andre Burakovsky, COL at VGK ($3,900): Burakovsky always seems to be underrated. After all, he tallied 20 goals and 25 assists last year, and he notched eight points through the first eight games this year. Five of those points came on the power play, so he's worth a stack with others on the PP2.

Jason Zucker, PIT vs. WAS ($3,500): Zucker has been quite inconsistent this season, but polar opposite results this year. In six of the last 11 games, he failed to direct a shot on net or post a point. In the other five games, he fired three or more shots on net, ringing up six total points in that stretch. He's a superb tournament option as a result.

LINE STACKS

Golden Knights vs. Avalanche

William Karlsson (C - $4,500), Jonathan Marchessault (W - $5,000), Reilly Smith (W - $3,700)

This line is starting to click, as they've combined for 10 goals through 12 games, piling on 14 assists in the process. The Avalanche's defense is quite sturdy, especially at the top. However, the Golden Knights' second line has recorded 2.86 xGF/60, ranking ahead of the first line, and all three skaters are established offensive threats.

Capitals at Penguins

Evgeny Kuznetsov (C - $5,400), Jakub Vrana (W - $4,300), T.J. Oshie (W - $4,500)

The Capitals are finally back to full health, and this line will reconvene for the first time since Jan. 19. The trio combined for 10 points through the first four games of the year, directing 28 shots on net as well. They'll likely team up on the power play as well, targeting the Penguins' 27th-ranked PK (70.9 percent).

DEFENSEMEN

Cale Makar, COL at VGK ($6,700): Makar was phenomenal before the Avalanche paused their season, registering 12 points -- six on the power play -- through 11 games. That's far from surprising, and he should log big minutes with fresh legs. The Golden Knights' PK has been strong, but Makar plays with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen on PP1, providing endless upside.

Alec Martinez, VGK vs. COL ($5,600): Martinez is so valuable because he plays major minutes and blocks a ton of shots. He's averaging 3.8 blocked shots per game, supplementing that floor with eight assists over 12 contests. Now he's skating on the top pairing with Alex Pietrangelo, so 25 minutes is comfortably within reach.

Justin Schultz, WAS at PIT ($3,600): John Carlson ($6,200) is certainly the chalky play for Washington, but Schultz has plenty of upside in his return to the lineup. Prior to a face injury, Schultz posted six points -- three with the man advantage -- over eight games. He'll be back on PP2, as he takes aim at the 29th-ranked PK (70.9 percent).

Pierre-Olivier Joseph, PIT vs. WAS ($3,300): Much like they did with John Marino last year, the Penguins hit the jackpot with Joseph. He's stacked up five points through eight games, and he's registered a 52.8 Corsi For percentage, meaning he's generating plenty of high-danger shots. His consistent power-play minutes are yet another plus.

Bowen Byram, COL at VGK ($2,800): Byram is taking on more responsibility, and he's skating on the top pairing with Makar now. He has just one point through eight games, but he's fired 15 shots on net. The fourth overall pick in 2019, he's worth a flier at this price range.
