DFS NHL Breakdown: Tuesday Cheat Sheets

DFS NHL Breakdown: Tuesday Cheat Sheets

This article is part of our DFS NHL Breakdown series.

The following files are loaded with information to assist you in creating your daily fantasy hockey rosters on FanDuel and DraftKings. There is a lot to take in here, and it will likely take you a few days of playing before you can confidently use all the information provided, so I would suggest starting slow: use the Line Stack sections and individual player rankings, then start to branch out into the power play values, hot/cold sections and beyond. Please send any questions and please be aware there's going to be a player here and there with a low number of games who "breaks the spreadsheet" and is off the charts in terms of projections & value, just keep in mind those are aberrations, this is not likely the next Wayne Gretzky that my spreadsheet has discovered.

Daily Notes

Top Section

At the left, it starts with the daily schedule but only games on the main slate will be included in the analysis. From the left are the teams with a color/number that designates how updated the rosters are (Green/0 means they have been updated today, Yellow/1 is one-day old rosters, Orange/2 is two-days old, Red/3 is older than two days). The scheduled time of the game is next.

The Starting Goalie is next with a C (Confirmed), L (Likely) or Blank (Projected).

The Betting Lines are from a Vegas consensus and are used as an anchor to reality so my numbers do not get out of control. The Projected Line is a hybrid of those Vegas numbers and my numbers and it what is used to determine my projections.

The next sections begin to include some shading for ease to see where the figures rank on the daily slate. Dark Green is the top tier at 85th percentile and higher, then Light Green, Yellow, Tan, Orange and Red for sub-25th percentile.

The Projected Stats shows Shots (S), Shooting Percentage (S%), Saves (SV) and Save Percentage (SV%) that my numbers are showing for the current lineups in the spreadsheet.

The Game Rating is a game-adjusted version of my Offensive/Defensive Rating System, and the Pace is essentially the average of the four numbers for each game.

Goals/60 shows the number of Power Play (PP) goals the team scores per 60 minutes on the Power Play, and vice versa the Penalty Kill (PK) goals allowed per 60 minutes.

Chances/60 is a ranking that combines Scoring Chances and High Danger Chances per 60 minutes at Even Strength, both for and against.

The 5x5 Line Rankings shows a rating of individual lines both offensively and defensively, including a share of Defense pairs.

The next section at the top right is the Power Play units in the current roster updates.

Bottom Section

At the left are the Full Forward Line Stacks; based on the price of the stacks each day there will be an expensive column (left) and cheap column (right). In each stack there is some helpful information, including the scheduled opponent, the cost of the three-man stack, the cost of the three-man stack plus their highest projected defenseman, their projected total points and their projected value (points/salary). Then each player in the stack is shown with their individual salary, position, power play unit and projected points. The stacks are also shaded to show their value percentile ranking, and the players may be shaded Green if they all correlate on the top power player, or Yellow if they all correlate on the second power play.

Below the Full Forward Line Stacks are two charts of two-man stacks, one chart shows Center/Wing stacks and one shows Wing/Wing stacks with similar information as the full stacks provided.

In the center of the bottom section are the Goalie projections, including the match up, salary for both sites for reference, projected fantasy points, projected fantasy points when ignoring the win points, and the value of the goalie with the same shading nomenclature used in other sections.

Next to the right are Power Play values with players on the top power play who cost less than $5,000 and players on the second power play units who cost less than $4,500.

On the far right is a chart that shows players who are under priced compared to the other site (FanDuel or DraftKings).

Below all of those charts are the individual player projections, broken up into different salary tiers.

DEFENSEMENCENTERSWINGS
$5,000+$7,000+$7,000+
$4,000-4,900$5,000-6,900$5,000-6,900
Less than $4,000$4,000-4,900$4,000-4,900
 Less than $4,000Less than $4,000

On the bottom right is a Solo Option chart that highlights players who score high in my solo ratings based on points scored and market share of points score versus their line mates.

Below that chart are charts for Hot & Cold Players over the last 14 days, based on points over/under their seasonal average over that time.

Again take it slowly with this sheet, build up your usage and find which items work best for you and please send me any questions you may have.
