Last Week's AT&T National
The 95-degree heat at the AT&T National and overnight damaging wind between rounds two and three caused so much havoc on the course that the third round allowed no spectators other than bare-bone squads needed for the round to be executed. The clean-up needed on the course delayed the third round start by six hours.
Meanwhile, the Congressional course was invoking its revenge for the 16-under shellacking given it by Rory McIlroy in the 2011 U.S. Open. No birdie binge this year.
Tiger Woods took the trophy for his third 2012 win and 74th career PGA Tour win. He leaves Jack Nicklaus, with whom he had been tied, and put Sam Snead's 82 wins right in the middle of the bull's eye. While 82 wins are a most memorable record, and Woods will be proud of it, winning of five more majors is the truly big target for Woods.
Woods certainly now has the overwhelming confidence he had before two years ago. He is set to rack up another regular PGA Tour event and also a major in 2012.
This week's win hinged on runner-up Bo Van Pelt's three consecutive bogeys in the last three holes, the worst place to blow up. But a win is a win, no matter how you get there playing legally.
Woods is playing The Greenbrier Classic for the first time. Perhaps he will be paired with Phil Mickelson in one of the rounds.

Rookie Scott Stallings canned a playoff-clutch birdie-2 to earn his first PGA Tour title over Bill Haas and Bob Estes at The Greenbrier Classic last year. Stallings was bogey-free in rounds two and three. Estes bogey-free 6-under 66 closing round included two eagles in his drive for the top.
Nine of the top-10 finishers averaged 315.6 yards off the tee last year with Gary Woodland ranking first at 331.6 yards. No doubt that driving distance was important inasmuch as the ranking of 21.5 (average) matched GIR in importance - that is seldom seen.
Course setup was changed for 2011 after Stuart Appleby scorched the track with a course-record 22-under 258, which included Appleby's closing-round 59. In 2010, 46 players had four rounds in the 60s; in 2011 there were none. Aggregate scores in 2010 averaged 68.536 compared with 2011 scores of 70.593. It is clear that ownership wants a challenging course.
Prepare to have anther tight, low-scoring finish. Needed is total driving, GIR, bogey avoidance (see Webb Simpson last year with 21 birdies, 11 bogeys and one double, and Kyle Stanley with two eagles, 17 birdies and 11 bogeys and one double) and, obviously, strong putting.
The three-year-old tournament played its first two years after the British Open and the Canadian Open in late July. The move to July 4 week will attract more fans in the mountains of West Virginia.
