2025 Fantasy Outlook
Shabanov is coming over to North America on a one-year, entry-level deal with the Islanders after playing in Russia for several years. There's some potential here, as his offensive output increased in each of his last three years in the KHL. The 24-year-old produced 23 goals, 44 assists and a plus-17 rating over 65 regular-season contests in 2024-25, and he also had 20 points in 21 postseason outings. Those are impressive numbers, and while he is a skilled player, his size (5-foot-8, 156 pounds) is a concern for making the transition to the NHL. The left-shot winger is a name worth monitoring this year, but he'll need to prove he can be an effective player on a smaller ice surface -- he could end up in the AHL if he doesn't impress the Islanders' coaching staff. Shabanov signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Shabanov had 23 goals and 67 points in 65 regular-season appearances with KHL Chelyabinsk in 2024-25. He added another 10 goals and 20 points across 21 playoff outings. Although the 24-year-old was never drafted by an NHL squad, and his size is a concern at 5-foot-8, 156 pounds, Shabanov's success in the KHL makes him an interesting grab for the Islanders. Keep an eye on him during training camp because he might end up on the Islanders' top six.

Slated for first-line role
Shabanov is expected to begin training camp in a first-line role alongside Bo Horvat, who is recovering from an ankle injury, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Shabanov looks set to be given every opportunity to earn a spot on the Opening Night roster during training camp. The 24-year-old Shabanov will be making his North American debut after agreeing to terms on a one-year, entry-level deal this offseason. Still, if the Russian struggles to adjust, he could find himself playing some games in the minors at some point during the 2025-26 campaign.
