This Week's Crowne Plaza Invitational

The Colonial Country Club at Fort Worth, Texas, first accommodated professional competition in 1946. In mid-May 1946, Ben Hogan won the first tournament with 1-under 279 on the par-70, 7,035-yard course. Since then little has changed the distances. In May 1969, distance was increased from 7,035 to 7,142 - that lasted until late 1979. Changes were modest through to 2009 when distance was boosted to today's 7,204.

Hogan's wins in 1946, 1947, 1951, 1953 and 1959 generated the course's nickname, "Hogan's Alley." Obviously, he was the first professional to command a single tournament.

Last year's winner, Zach Johnson, had a three-stroke lead over Jason Dufner entering the fourth round's 18th hole where Johnson failed to correctly replace a moved marker on the green. That drew a two-stroke penalty leaving him with a one-stroke win. Lucky!!

What is an Invitational, you ask? This Invitational is one of five on the PGA Tour. The others are the Arnold Palmer, RBC Heritage, The Memorial and AT&T National. Fields generally are close to 132 players as compared with the usual full-field 156 and majors.
Every year, past champions of the Crown Plaza Invitational select two golfers to compete in the event who otherwise are not eligible, a unique PGA Tour tradition known as Champions Choice. This year's exemptions are 19-year old Jordan Spieth and Franklin Corpening. Spieth has seven PGA Tour cuts made in 10 starts. Corpening's six cuts in seven Web.com Tour starts, including a third place last Sunday. The Crowne Plaza will be Corpening's first PGA Tour event.

Round 3: 6-under 64, Kelly Kraft
