Last Week's Travelers Championship

Marc Leishman had a fairly balanced set of statistics in his win at the Travelers. He coupled driving distance and driving accuracy, not an every-day pairing. While his strokes gained-putt (0.053) is well below average (1.338) for the 23 events, his closing bogey-free round 8-under 62 is well above average.

Leishman finished his closing round at 3:40 p.m., sparing him the pressure of the frequent lead changes in the last hours of the Travelers. No doubt that the contenders were well aware of Leishman's 14-under hovering over each of their shots. An early "number" is sometimes effective.

Reviewing the 23 winners' numbers to date shows GIR and strokes gained-putting are clearly more beneficial toward winning than driving distance and driving accuracy. The ranking numbers are closely parallel to last year's putts-per-GIR and putts-per-round. Had we had scrambling data we might see numbers almost as low (better) as GIR and putting.

Better numbers are coming in driving accuracy as players value the opportunity to play from the short grass that produces shots with better accuracy, avoiding the tightly mowed shoulders around the greens.

The AT&T returns to the Congressional Country Club after a two-year hiatus during witch the Congressioal course was undergoing preparations for the 2011 U.S. Open. In 2010 and 2011, Aronimink Golf Club in suburban Philadelphia hosted the AT&T. Fantasy players should be careful in gathering 2010 and 2011 results inasmuch as the last two years were played at Aronimink.

The Par-70 Congressional is a classic course designed by Donald Ross with the Ross undulations on the greens and run-offs around the greens. Long hitters do well here, and GIR, proximity to the hole, consistent good putting, par-4 scoring and bogey avoidance are a must.

The AT&T usually has a strong field, and this year's field has a sizeable mix of strong, experienced players in Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, K.J Choi, Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan, Adam Scott, Nick Watney and others.

Within the younger group are Patrick Cantlay, Bud Cauley, John Huh and amateurs Jordan Spiefh and Beau Hossler, a high school senior who did well at the U.S. Open.

The 2009 AT&T at Congressional:

Tiger Woods - 64-66-70-67 = 13-under 267
Hunter Mahan - 69-69-68-62 = 12-under 268
Anthony Kim - 62-70-68-71 = 9-under 271
Brice Molder - 64-70-70-68 = 8-under 272
Brandt Snedeker - 68-70-68-67 = 7-under 273
Lucas Glover - 69-66-68-70 = 7-under 273

Low rounds

Round 1: Anthony Kim 8-under 62
Round 2: Rod Pampling 6-under 64
Round 3: Michael Allen 5-under 65
Round 4: Hunter Mahan 8-under 62

Cut was 2-over 142
