Golf Barometer: Hesitant on Howell

This article is part of our Golf Barometer series.

Two tournaments remain on the 2017-18 PGA Tour schedule as the FedExCup Playoffs are halfway complete, with Bryson DeChambeau owning the winner's circle at both the Northern Trust and Dell Technologies Championship. He seemingly did everything in his power to lock up a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup, as he will officially be heading to Paris with Team USA. This week's BMW Championship is hosted in the Philadelphia area by Aronimink Golf Club, site of the 2010 and 2011 AT&T National. We'll take a look at several fantasy trends along with a handful of injury updates as the season nears its end.

VALUE RISING

C.T. Pan

Pan has given himself a chance at qualifying for the TOUR Championship with a solid week at Aronimink GC, rising to 33rd in the FedExCup standings with two top-5s and a T11 in three of his last four starts. Pan has joined the top-100 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career, but he's also shown maturity and poise as demonstrated by his easygoing reaction following an errant tee shot on the 72nd hole while in contention at the Wyndham Championship. He ranks fifth on Tour in GIR percentage and 14th in driving accuracy, which is a significant improvement for someone who missed 13 cuts in 2017.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello

Cabrera-Bello added a T7 at the Dell Technologies Championship to bring his worldwide total to six top-10s in 2018. The Spaniard has finished worse than T17 just once in

VALUE RISING

Rafa Cabrera-Bello

Cabrera-Bello added a T7 at the Dell Technologies Championship to bring his worldwide total to six top-10s in 2018. The Spaniard has finished worse than T17 just once in his last five starts, while he's seventh on Tour in GIR percentage and 19th in SG: Tee-to-Green.

Cameron Smith

Back-to-back top-3s at the Dell Technologies Championship and Northern Trust have this streaky Aussie up to 32nd in the OWGR, the best position of his career thus far. Smith is back inside of the top-10 in the FedExCup standings thanks to his sixth and seventh top-10s of the season, so expect to see him again at East Lake.

Abraham Ancer

Despite a final-round meltdown at the Dell Technologies where Ancer was chasing his first career PGA Tour victory, the 27-year-old still managed to post his third top-10 in seven starts. He's up to a career-best 121st in the OWGR while ranking 42nd on Tour in SG: Off-the-Tee.

VALUE FALLING

Charles Howell III

The 39-year-old has now finished T58-MC-T71-MC since four consecutive top-30s from the FedEx St. Jude Classic through The Greenbrier. He'll be a longshot to qualify for East Lake at 57th in the FedExCup standings heading to Aronimink, while Howell ranks outside of the top-160 on Tour in proximity from 175-plus yards.

Andrew Landry

Since a top-10 at the Quicken Loans National in late June, Landry has gone six straight starts without a single finish better than a T50. At 35th in the FedExCup standings, another poor week at the BMW Championship would keep him from moving on to East Lake.

INJURY UPDATE

Rickie Fowler

Rickie is officially slated to tee it up at Aronimink GC this week as he returns from the partial oblique tear that has kept him sidelined since the PGA Championship. He's finished no worse than T28 in eight consecutive starts, but is still in search of his first win in 2018.

Billy Horschel

Horschel withdrew during his first round at the Dell Technologies Championship due to an illness, but he's back in action this week at the BMW Championship. Prior to his WD at TPC Boston, he finished T3-T11 at the Northern Trust and Wyndham Championship.

Daniel Berger

Berger's 2017-18 campaign has come to an end after the 25-year-old withdrew from the field for this week's BMW Championship, citing his lingering wrist/hand injury as the cause. His season was highlighted by a T6 at the U.S. Open, but the injury resulted in an overall dip in production. He ranked just 125th in birdie average and 160th in SG: Around-the-Green. Berger's next start may not come until late October at the WGC-HSBC Champions.
