Zay Jones

Zay Jones

29-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
Arizona Cardinals
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Jones signed with Jacksonville during the 2022 offseason and subsequently had a career year with 82 catches for 823 yards and five touchdowns. 2023 was a much different story, with Jones bothered by a knee injury for most of the season and ultimately finishing with 321 yards in nine games. He's thought to be healthy now, but the Jaguars released Jones this spring after signing WR Gabe Davis and drafting WR Brian Thomas in the first round. The 29-year-old hooked on with the Cardinals in May and could move into the No. 2 or 3 WR role behind rookie Marvin Harrison, giving quarterback Kyler Murray another intermediate option with good speed for a tall receiver (6-2). Second-year pro Michael Wilson and slot specialist Greg Dortch will also be in the mix for WR snaps, though Harrison and TE Trey McBride are the favorites to see steady targets. Read Past Outlooks

Jones failed to secure his lone target in Monday's 17-15 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Jones made his season debut Monday after missing the first six games of the campaign, albeit it in a limited role. The veteran wideout played just 11 of the Cardinals' 57 offensive snaps in the contest behind fellow receivers Marvin Harrison (48), Michael Wilson (44) and Greg Dortch (17). Buried on Arizona's depth chart as a member of an inconsistent passing attack, Jones should remain far off the fantasy radar heading into a Week 8 matchup against the Dolphins.

Jones finished 2021 strong in Las Vegas and earned a three-year, $24 million contract in 2022 in Jacksonville, where he quickly became a favorite of Trevor Lawrence's in the short passing game. Jones' aDOT dropped from 14.0 his final season in Vegas to 8.6 his first year in Jacksonville, with the trade off career highs for targets (121), catches (82) and receiving yards (823). It would've been a bigger year if not for his league-high 13 drops, and his lackluster 6.8 YPT was easily topped by teammates Christian Kirk (133 targets, 8.3 YPT) and Evan Engram (98 targets, 7.8 YPT). Better efficiency seems likely this year, if only because it would be hard to drop that many passes again and third-year QB Trevor Lawrence figures to continue improving. On the other hand, Calvin Ridley is replacing an over-the-hill Marvin Jones at wideout, making Zay unlikely to approach last year's volume.
Jones spent the past three years with the Raiders and rebounded with 47 catches for 546 yards and one touchdown last season, which was his first notable production since his second year in the league with the Bills in 2018. He received $14 million guaranteed over a three-year deal with the Jaguars, which should slot him in as the No. 3 wideout on the depth chart behind Christian Kirk and Marvin Jones. QB Trevor Lawrence struggled as a rookie last year, but the Jaguars have made significant additions across the offense. Jones' outlook is significantly improved over past seasons, though any production is far from guaranteed while joining a new offense with an unproven signal-caller.
During his first full season in the silver and black, Jones underwhelmed with just 14 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown to go along with two drops in 16 games. He doesn't contribute on special teams either, so the Raiders could seek additional upside elsewhere if Jones struggles at all in training camp. Regardless of job security, Jones probably wouldn't sniff fantasy relevance behind a healthy wide receiver quartet of Henry Ruggs, John Brown, Hunter Renfrow and Bryan Edwards.
The Raiders' receiving corps became quite crowded in a heartbeat this offseason as the team added rookies Henry Ruggs, Bryan Edwards and Lynn Bowden within the first 100 overall picks of the draft, while also adding 2015 first-rounder Nelson Agholor in free agency. Jones is immediately pushed down to at least No. 6 on the WR depth chart, coming off a 10-game campaign with the Raiders in which he caught just 20 passes for 147 yards despite logging 466 offensive snaps.
With the Bills beefing up their receiving corps this offseason -- namely by adding John Brown and Cole Beasley -- there's been talk Jones' roster spot could be in jeopardy, though he did lead the team in receptions (56) and receiving yards (652) last season, while hauling in seven TDs. On the plus side, Jones seems to be getting the pro game down, not to mention he already has one season in the books with Josh Allen. The 24-year-old seems a lot closer to the No. 2 receiving spot than being a cut, though he'll probably have to fight off Robert Foster for looks in the offense, as Brown and Beasley seem set at two of the top three spots. In preparation for the coming season, Jones has reportedly added eight to 10 pounds of lean muscle mass to his upper body, which should help the 6-2, 200-pounder have a better chance of out-muscling defensive backs for the ball, which has at times been an issue for the 2017 second-rounder.
Jones had a disappointing rookie season in 2017. After leading the NCAA in receptions the previous year, he only hauled in 36.5 percent of his 74 targets in his first NFL campaign. There's still a high ceiling for Jones, but he didn't do much with his opportunities last year, and he'll have to move past the unusual off-field issues he went through during the offseason. He'll have a new quarterback and offensive coordinator, but he'll also have some tough competition for the No. 2 receiver job after the Bills traded for Corey Coleman in early August.
The Bills' second-round pick, Jones has an excellent chance for targets right out of the gate, especially with Anquan Boldin abruptly deciding to retire. Jordan Matthews is locked in as a contributor, but the depth chart is otherwise thin, leaving Jones as the likely No. 3 receiver. Jones could even push for the No. 1 outside role, as Matthews is best utilized out of the slot. While the Bills are a run-first team, they lack a designated third-down back or high-volume tight end. At 6-2, 201 with 4.45 40 speed, Jones is fast for a tall receiver and a strong route runner with good hands. He's not the home-run threat of the recently departed Sammy Watkins, but rather a more athletic (133-inch broad jump) possession complement than last year's version (Robert Woods). After notching 158 catches at East Carolina in 2016, Jones could make an immediate impact in a revamped receiving corps.

Team clears space for return
WRArizona Cardinals
October 10, 2024
Jones is poised to rejoin Arizona's roster ahead of the team's Week 6 game against the Packers, as the Cardinals released fellow wide receiver Chris Moore on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Moore's release coincided with Jones logging a full practice Wednesday. The move freed up a spot on the wide receiver depth chart, and more importantly opened up a spot on the 53-man roster, which can be filled by Jones once the Cardinals opt to officially activate him. Jones was suspended for the first five games of the season, and Arizona was granted a roster exemption that could delay his activation until Monday, October 14, but he appears likely to be activated prior to Sunday's game in Green Bay.
