2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tavai recorded a career-high 110 tackles to go along with two interceptions and a sack in 17 games with the Patriots during the 2023 regular season. In the process, the 27-year-old - who joined the league as a second-round pick of the Lions in 2019 - took a step forward as a hybrid ILB/OLB for the team. He's slated to reprise that role in a defense that now will be led by new coordinator DeMarcus Covington. Read Past Outlooks

Agrees to three-year extension
LBNew England Patriots
July 2, 2024
Tavai and the Patriots agreed to terms Tuesday on a three-year extension with a $15 million base value, and that can reach $21 million with incentives, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Tavai has entrenched himself as a key member of New England's starting linebacker corps, playing a hybrid ILB/OLB role that saw him record 110 tackles, two interceptions and a sack in 17 games last season. He now joins DT Christian Barmore, RB Rhamondre Stevenson and C David Andrews as players who were entering the final year of their contracts but have re-signed under new coach Jerod Mayo. Tavai is well positioned to repeat as a worthwhile fantasy option in IDP formats in new defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington's scheme.

In his second campaign with the Patriots, Tavai notched 69 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 17 games. The 26-year-old, who entered the league as a second-rounder (by the Lions) in 2019, will continue to bring valuable physicality and versatility to New England's linebacker corps in 2023.
Reportedly losing significant weight in the offseason, Tavai is in great shape as the Lions' new coaching staff transitions the defense to a 3-4 alignment in the post-Jarrad Davis era. If this means Tavai might finally have the speed to be useful on passing downs, a three-down role could be in the cards for the Hawaii product, which would be a boon for his IDP profile.
Detroit hasn't been thrilled with what it's gotten out of 2017 first-round middle linebacker Jarrad Davis. While Tavai - taken in the second round in the spring of 2019 - wasn't necessarily drafted as Davis' direct replacement, there are only so many players a team can put on the field, and the offseason additions of Jamie Collins and Reggie Ragland suddenly give the Lions its deepest group of linebackers in years. While all of them could be a part of the rotation, it wouldn't be complete surprise if Tavai becomes the primary middle linebacker before season's end. After all, Detroit declined to pick up Davis' fifth-year option this offseason, possibly making this Davis' last stand in Motown.

Nabs extension from Pats
LBNew England Patriots
July 4, 2024
Tavai, who recorded a career-high 110 tackles in 2023, agreed to a three-year extension with the Patriots on Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tavai tied for the second-most tackles on the Patriots in 2023, helping him earn a deal that could be worth up to $21 million. The emerging linebacker began his career ascent when he joined New England in 2021 after two years with the Lions, and he's proven highly durable by appearing in all 17 regular-season games in both of the last two campaigns.
