Welcome to my Daily Plays article for Tuesday June 16, 2015. Interleague play is in full effect this week, so have some interesting matchups to break down. Tuesday has a few day games on the schedule, which is rare, but we have ten games on the evening slate. Let's get on to the picks.
Pitcher
Matt Harvey, $10,400 - Harvey is the most expensive pitcher available, and due to the lack of other appealing options, Harvey is the top choice, and will look to get back on track coming off arguably the worst start of his career. His opponent, the Blue Jays, are not nearly as tough of a matchup away from Rogers Centre, and they struck out eleven times on Monday against fellow Met Noah Syndergaard. Harvey maintains an elite strikeout rate, and prior to his last start he had dominant numbers at Citi Field. He is facing a rookie pitcher in Scott Copeland as well, so he has a good chance to earn a win. Look for Harvey to rebound in a big way after his last start, making him the top pitcher available, and worth the price tag on Tuesday night.
Charlie Morton, $7,400 - Morton has been outstanding since returning from injury in May. Morton has won all four of his starts so far in 2015, and has gone seven innings in three of those four starts. Although he is not a big strikeout pitcher, he did strike out six batters in his last start, and did not allow a run. Morton faces the impotent White Sox offense at home, who struck out twelve times on Monday night against Francisco Liriano. The matchup is prime for Morton, and with his affordable price tag and recent production, he is the top value choice at pitcher.
Catcher
Matt Wieters, $3,100 - Wieters is finally healthy and has been swinging a hot bat lately. Wieters has two doubles and two home runs in his past six games, and is batting .400 versus right-handed pitching so far in 2015. He faces the struggling Jerome Williams, who has a 5.71 ERA, in hitter friendly Camden Yards. With big time power, and an attractive matchup, Wieters makes an excellent value play at catcher.
First Base
Adam Lind, $2,700 - Lind loves to face right-handed pitching, especially at home, and makes a great value play whenever that is the case. Lind is batting .301 versus right-handers, and .340 at home in Miller Park (including six of his nine home runs). Batting cleanup for the Brewers, fire up Lind at an attractive price on Tuesday night.
Second Base
Dee Gordon, $3,100 - Gordon's price has decreased to a very affordable level, and makes a strong play due to the lack of other options. Gordon is batting .363 versus right-handed pitching in 2015, and has stolen 22 bases. He can steal multiple bases in a game, and has twelve doubles and two triples as well, giving him tremendous upside. Facing mediocre right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, Gordon has a solid matchup as well, making him a strong choice at a difficult position.
Third Base
Maikel Franco, $3,000 - Franco has been on a tear lately, batting .396 with four home runs so far this month. Franco has been batting in the cleanup spot for the Phillies lately, and has a juicy matchup against the struggling Chris Tillman and his 5.68 ERA. He also gets a ballpark boost, as the game is being played in home run friendly Camden Yards. Franco has big time talent, and with an affordable price tag and appealing matchup, he makes an excellent value play.
Shortstop
Elvis Andrus, $2,700 - Andrus has always enjoyed facing left-handed pitching, and is batting .308 versus southpaws so far in 2015 (including two of his three home runs). Andrus bats in the middle of the Rangers lineup nowadays, so he has the ability to drive in runs, as well as steal bases. He is facing Brett Anderson, who has been decent in 2015, but has benefited from pitching at Dodger Stadium. This game will be played in hitter friendly Globe Life Park, so Anderson could struggle. Shortstop is thin as usual, so fire up Andrus at a very attractive price.
Outfield
Kole Calhoun, $2,800 - Bryce Harper and Mike Trout both have excellent matchups and are worth fitting into your lineup if possible. Calhoun is a much cheaper option, and can be played along with Trout, or instead of Trout at a fraction of the price. Calhoun loves hitting at home in Angels Stadium, where his batting average is .308, and he has hit five of his six home runs. He is batting cleanup for the Angels and faces Jeremy Hellickson, who is known to get hit hard by left handed hitters. Calhoun is the top value play in the outfield, and makes an excellent choice at under $3K.
Alex Gordon, $2,700 - Gordon is a far superior hitter on the road, and his price tag is very affordable. Gordon faces Matt Garza, who is prone to giving up home runs, in hitter friendly Miller Park. Gordon sports a .308 batting average on the road, including six of his eight home runs, and bats in the heart of the potent Royals lineup. Look for Gordon to have a big game on Tuesday night.
Gerardo Parra, $2,500 - Parra has been filling in for the injured Khris Davis, and has been very productive lately. In his last five games, Parra has two doubles, one home run, and four RBI. He has been batting at the top of the Brewers lineup, and has sneaky power as well. Parra benefits from playing in Miller Park, and has a solid matchup against Chris Young who has struggled versus left-handers in the past.
