2025 Fantasy Outlook
Cole missed nearly the entire first half with elbow nerve inflammation but came back to make 17 starts, albeit not at the same level of dominance he had pitched at from 2018 through 2023. However, Cole's elbow started barking in an early-March spring start and it was quickly revealed he would need Tommy John surgery, wiping out his 2025 season. Cole's 25.4 percent strikeout rate and 17.9 K-BB% were his lowest rates since leaving Pittsburgh and the strikeout rate has now worsened each of the past four seasons. Perhaps it was the rust of missing so much early time as his walk rate was also his worst since 2018. Most of Cole's other measures held up well enough, but seeing his average fastball velocity dip below 96.0 mph for the first time in seven seasons was a red flag even before the injury this spring. Cole has a chance to return in the summer of 2026. Read Past Outlooks

Placed on 60-day IL
The Yankees placed Cole (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Cole will miss all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so the Yankees will stash him away on the 60-day IL to free up a roster spot for Carlos Carrasco, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The ace right-hander's fourth season in the Bronx was his best since joining the Yankees, as he made 33 starts and finished with a 2.63 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 222:48 K:BB across 209.1 innings to earn his first Cy Young Award. It's the fifth straight season Cole topped 200 punchouts (the shortened 2020 campaign notwithstanding), though his 27.0 percent strikeout rate was his lowest since 2017. He lost a tick on his fastball in 2023 but still averaged 96.7 mph, and he improved his HR/9 to 0.86 and his HR/FB to 9.4 percent, respectively. However, the 33-year-old had a 3.60 xFIP and 3.43 xERA, which more closely aligns with his performance from the previous two seasons (3.37 ERA) and could indicate a bit of a regression is due in 2024. Still, even if he's unable to fully replicate his 2023 campaign, Cole is a fairly safe bet to be one of the top fantasy pitchers in the league once again.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Team open to extension
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said Wednesday that the club is open to adding onto Cole's four-year, $144 million contract, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Cole exercised an opt-out clause in his contract earlier this month in hopes that the Yankees would add an additional year and $36 million onto his deal. The team called the pitcher's bluff and the opt-out decision was essentially ignored, keeping the original contract in place. While it wouldn't seem the Yankees have much of an appetite to extend Cole's contract, Steinbrenner isn't ruling out the possibility. Presumably, it would be for much less than the aforementioned $36 million figure.
