2025 Fantasy Outlook
Murphy broke onto the scene last season with Newcastle at the age of 30, reaching almost 2,400 minutes, a mark he had never come close to touching. He started 31 of 35 appearances while registering eight goals and 12 assists, earning a career-high in assists and goal contributions. Murphy capitalized his role following the departure of Miguel Almiron and since returning from shoulder surgery in January 2024, he's been a lock for the XI. The question is what his minutes will look like with newly added Anthony Elanga.
Still not 100 percent
F/MNewcastle United
January 30, 2026
Murphy is slowly returning to full fitness despite making the bench Wednesday, according to manager Eddie Howe. "Jacob's getting there. He's made some good progress in the last few days. Yesterday was his first full training session. Again, another player that was there with us but slightly reluctant to use him."
ANALYSIS
Murphy suffered the injury three weeks ago and still isn't 100 percent, which likely means a gradual return to the pitch in the coming weeks. The schedule eases up a bit for at least the next seven days, which should allow him to return to fitness. Once fully ready, he figures to receive minutes, though similar to before, his starts will be sporadic with the majority of the attack healthy.

Given resting period
F/MNewcastle United
January 16, 2026
Murphy (hamstring) was given a period of rest due to an injury, although the scans didn't show anything, coach Eddie Howe said in the press conference. "Jacob has had another scan and again, nothing is showing which is a strange one. You have to go on the symptoms and how the player feels. That'll probably mean a period that Jacob has to come out. How long, I don't know but we're thankful it's not a serious problem and hopefully one we can overcome quickly."

Needs to be assessed
F/MNewcastle United
January 14, 2026
Murphy (hamstring) needs to be assessed to know the full extent of the new setback he suffered in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, coach Eddie Howe said in a press conference, according to HaystersTV. "We don't think Jacob's injury is serious. But of course, we're waiting to see the full extent. He's had a hamstring problem for a couple of weeks. He's had two scans that have come back clear, so we're not quite sure what's going on with him."
