Struggles continue in Vegas
Mayes lost to Valter Walker via submission (heel hook) at 1:17 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was another woeful performance from Mayes, who lasted just a shade over a minute. Known as a striker with limited power and no grappling game, Don'Tale gave up an immediate takedown to Walker, who eventually rolled into position to clamp on the heel hook. It was essentially over before it started. A loser of two in a row and three of four dating back to November 2023, Mayes is just about out of time.

Schedules next opponent
Mayes will face Valter Walker in a heavyweight bout at UFC Vegas 102 on Feb. 15, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Mayes is coming off a loss at the hands of Shamil Gaziev to drop his UFC record to 4-5. Thus, this is a huge bout for the heavyweight, as he's in danger of falling to two fights under .500. His opponent Walker, meanwhile, is much less experienced. He's coming off a win in just his second career UFC fight.

No-shows Abu Dhabi defeat
Mayes lost to Shamil Gaziev via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
We've seen some lousy efforts from Mayes over the years, but this was unquestionably one of the worst. A one-dimensional brawler with zero means of generating secondary offense, Mayes spent nearly 12 minutes (11:58) of this fight being controlled by Gaziev on the mat. He was either unable or unwilling to do what was necessary to work his way back to his feet, and he lost a lopsided unanimous decision as a result. The very definition of roster depth, Mayes is just 4-5 (1NC) in 10 UFC bouts despite the fact he has been fighting low-level competition his entire run.

Scheduled against Gaziev
Mayes is scheduled to compete against Shamil Gaziev in a heavyweight fight at UFC Abu Dhabi on Aug. 3, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
A month from now, Mayes will look to build a winning streak by defeating Gaziev. He got back in the win column by defeating Caio Machado via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 55.

Gets right back in win column
Mayes defeated Caio Machado via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC on ESPN 55 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
This was viewed as close to a pick 'em when the fight went off, and it played out that way inside the Octagon. The truth of the matter is if these two men fought ten times, both are likely to win five. Mayes has always had questionable cardio, and it showed here. He basically took the third round off, but the judges felt he did enough good work over the first ten minutes, including a Round 1 knockdown, to earn the decision. Now 32 years of age and having alternated wins and losses in his past four fights, "Lord Kong" is the very definition of roster depth.
