This Week's St. Jude Classic

In 1958, a group of businessmen founded the Memphis Invitational Open, bringing top-level professional golf to the area. Bill Maxwell won the opener at Colonial CC, earning about $6,000.

Entertainer Danny Thomas, an avid golfer, put his name on the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic from 1970 through 1984. After Thomas' death, Federal Express came in, off and on, and finally took over. Their involvement fostered the PGA Tour season-long FedEx Cup competition.

A significant player accomplishment came about here in 1977 as Al Geiberger shot a 13-under 59, the first to do so. Geiberger was chased by Jerry McGee and Gary Player who finished second with a pair of 276s to Geibergers' 273. The venue then was at the par-72 Colonial CC with 7,282 yards. Since that 59 there have been three more 59s.

The par-70 TPC Southwind course has a lot of doglegs (shaping the ball) tight fairways (driving accuracy needed), hidden bunkers, small undulating greens (GIR) surrounded by large chipping areas (scrambling). Both bombers and short hitters have equal chances.

In 2012, the course scoring ranked as 10th toughest:

Round 1: 72.1
Round 2: 70.8
Round 3: 70.3
Round 4: 70.3
Total: 71.2

Eagles: 22
Birdies: 1,353
Bogeys: 1,463
Doubles: 219
Triples: 21

The Par-3 14th ranked as the 37th most difficult hole:

AVG Score: 3.318
Birdies: 37
Bogeys: 105
Doubles: 36
Triples: 2

Course record: 61, Jay Delsing, Bob Estes,* 2001

Tournament record: 22-under 258, John Cook, 1996
