The hard-driving Hawaiian wind that generated postponements for the Tournament of Champions are hopefully gone. The Sony usually has had 12-15 mph wind, which is expected again this week.

Rookies coming from Q-School and Web.com Tour's top 25 will test their sparkling, new 2013 PGA Tour cards for the first time. Regrettably, rookies have not had much success here where winners put up 13- to 16-under scores. The par-70 course is demanding, and as a result birdies are valuable and bogeys await when overly aggressive play comes in.

Fantasy owners in the Yahoo!/PGA Tour game had a tough time here last year. As an example: four Yahoo! experts select eight players, two in Group A, four in Group B and two in Group C. Their 32 picks suffered 15 cuts and two MDFs (made cut but did not finish).

Look for Sony Open experience; driving accuracy (tight fairways); scrambling skills (small greens) and proximity to hole. Bogey avoidance examples are in the 2012 statistic grid. As always, strong putting.

Last Five Winners & Runners-Up:

2012 - Johnson Wagner, 13-under 267; Carl Pettersson
2011 - Mark Wilson, 16-under, 264; Tim Clark
2010 - Ryan Palmer, 15-under 265; Robert Allenby
2009 - Zach Johnson, 15-under 265; Adam Scott, David Toms
2008 - K.J. Choi, 14-under 266; Rory Sabbatini

2012 Low Rounds:

Round 1 - Graham DeLaet, 7-under 63
Round 2 - Brendon de Jonge, 8-under 62
Round 3 - D.A. Points, 6-under 64
Round 4 - John Rollins, 6-under 64

All of the above are in this year's Sony except Scott and Toms.
