Sione Vaki

Sione Vaki

23-Year-Old Running BackRB
Detroit Lions
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Vaki spent his rookie campaign in 2024 as a depth option at running back behind Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Craig Reynolds, turning six carries into 14 yards and reeling in three passes for 37 yards while playing just 25 offensive snaps during the regular season. With Gibbs, Montgomery and Reynolds back in 2025, Vaki likely will operate in a similar role again, greatly limiting his fantasy upside. If he can wrestle the third-string job from Reynolds in training camp he would at least set himself up for fantasy production should Gibbs or Montgomery get hurt. Read Past Outlooks

Sees limited use in rookie season
RBDetroit Lions
January 20, 2025
Vaki appeared in 16 of the Lions' 17 games during the regular season, finishing with six carries for 14 yards and three catches for 37 yards. He was also active for the Lions' 45-31 divisional-round loss to the Commanders on Saturday, playing all 24 of his snaps on special teams.
ANALYSIS
Though Vaki excelled at both safety and running during his time in college at Utah, the Lions drafted him in the fourth round of April's draft with the intention of making him a full-time running back. He saw limited action on offense as a rookie while Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery took on the bulk of the snaps out of the backfield, but Vaki's established himself as a core member of Detroit's special-teams units. In addition to returning two kickoffs for 55 yards, Vaki recorded eight tackles over his 310 special-teams snaps. With both Gibbs and Montgomery under contract for 2025, Vaki's role on offense may not expand dramatically in his second NFL season.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Vaki is a rare athlete that has experience playing on both sides of the ball, operating as a running back and safety for Utah prior to being selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. With David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs already set to handle the bulk of the workload in the Lions backfield this season, Vaki will have to compete with Craig Reynolds for a depth role, making his path towards production on offense rather murky. The 5-11, 210-pound athlete seems more likely to see the bulk of his playing time on special teams in the early going.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Lions' RB3 sans Montgomery
RBDetroit Lions
December 21, 2024
Vaki has been mostly limited to special teams work in his rookie season, but he has an opportunity to establish a larger role for himself in the backfield due to David Montgomery being sidelined with an MCL injury, Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaki has registered only six carries for 14 yards across 13 regular-season games. However, heading into Sunday's game against the Bears, Vaki is expected to serve in the Lions' No. 3 running back spot behind Jahmyr Gibbs and Craig Reynolds. The Lions traded up to select Vaki in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft for his potential as a playmaker on offense, and that gives offensive coordinator Ben Johnson another potential weapon for the NFL's top-scoring offense.
