2025 Fantasy Outlook
There wasn't much doubt at the time, but Smith's performance in 2024 reaffirmed the Ravens' decision to prioritize keeping him in the purple and black while letting Patrick Queen walk to a division rival. Smith operated without an effective partner in the middle of Baltimore's linebacker corps after Queen's departure, as Trenton Simpson fell flat attempting to step into the role. That in turn forced Malik Harrison into a role he wasn't necessarily suited for. Despite that challenge, Smith was able to tally at least 150 tackles in his fourth consecutive season and his durability and importance to his team make him one of the safest IDP selections on the board. Diagnosed with Grade 2 strain

September 29, 2025
Smith was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain Monday and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith sustained the injury while in pass coverage during the second quarter of Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Chiefs. He will likely be sidelined for the Ravens' Week 5 matchup against the Texans this Sunday, and given the severity of the injury, the veteran linebacker is a candidate for a stint on injured reserve. Trenton Simpson and Jake Hummel both saw a significant increase in snaps at inside linebacker in Week 4, and both should continue to see a bigger workload on defense in Smith's absence.

In the last four seasons, Smith has never finished lower than sixth in the league in total tackles. In large part, that consistency has been due to Smith's ability to stay on the field. After being banged up for parts of his first two years in the league with the Bears, he has turned in four consecutive seasons with over 1,000 total snaps. During his first full season in Baltimore in 2023, Smith was also asked to take on additional responsibility as a cover linebacker. He played a career-high 649 snaps in coverage (per PFF) and responded by breaking up a career-best seven passes. Heading into 2024, Smith will remain the centerpiece of the Ravens' defense, though he will face a new challenge of not having Patrick Queen lining up alongside him. Smith will likely be asked to take on even more as a result, which could increase his production so long as the Baltimore defensive line plays well enough to occupy opposing offensive linemen in order to keep him clean.
The Bears decided to deal Smith for draft picks rather than pay him what he wanted, but the Ravens were more than happy to take on that burden, snapping him up just before Halloween last year and then handing the linebacker a five-year, $100 million extension in January. Smith's play never flagged, and he topped 160 tackles for the second consecutive season, 83 in eight games with Chicago and 86 in nine for Baltimore. The 26-year-old rounded out his elite production with 4.5 sacks and a career-high three interceptions, and his athleticism and instincts are a perfect fit in John Harbaugh's scheme.
Smith is one of the NFL’s most talented defenders, both highly athletic and instinctive, and his skill set covers all aspects of linebacker play. It’s unsurprising that a linebacker who’s among the best at everything is also a candidate to finish 2022 as the top IDP. The Bears are expected to run more of a 4-3 scheme after mostly using a 3-4 under Matt Nagy, but this could help Smith by giving him more D-line cover.
It's easy to overlook Smith with so much talent at the top of the linebacker rankings, but that's ill-advised. Smith is more than capable of finishing a season as LB1, because few players can match his versatile upside across tackles, sacks and interceptions. With hair-trigger instincts and 4.51 speed, Smith has a sideline-to-sideline presence and can chase down anyone from quarterbacks to wide receivers. He easily cleared triple-digit tackles in each of his three seasons and just turned 24, so he still has room to grow, especially if he gets more pass-rushing opportunities.
Perhaps the Bears defense won't regain the explosiveness it showed during its memorable 2018 season, Smith's first in the NFL, but the former Georgia star will likely do his own part in working toward Chicago's return to dominance. Still only 23, his tackle production has been strong to this point, totaling 222 stops on 1,669 snaps. That would project to about 133 tackles on a 1,000-snap workload, which makes Smith an easy LB1, especially given his strong pass-rushing numbers otherwise. With seven career sacks, he would project for about four sacks on a 1,000-snap sample. As an instinctive and highly athletic linebacker, it wouldn't be surprising if Smith started to make a bigger turnover impact after posting just two interceptions and zero forced fumbles to this point.
Although he's ranked fourth, Smith could be drafted first among linebackers, as his upside is difficult to overstate. He was extremely productive as a 21-year-old rookie last year, posting numbers of All-Pro quality while playing only 880 snaps. He'd be hard-pressed to increase his per-snap production, but it can't be ruled out. We can, however, rule out the possibility of Smith playing fewer than 900 snaps in 16 games, so the volume should spike upward through workload at least. Uniquely instinctive, disruptive and athletic, Smith boasts every applicable skill.
You're forgiven if you don't trust a rookie enough to valuate him this highly, but Smith is very likely the real deal, and Chicago didn't pick him eighth overall to phase him in slowly. Smith (6-1, 236) sometimes looks like a heat-seeking missile compared to the other 10 defenders, boasting plus-plus instincts and athleticism both. After running a 4.51 40 on the heels of a final season at Georgia with 137 tackles (14 for loss) and 6.5 sacks in 15 games, Smith is ready to hunt in the NFL.

Smith missed a second consecutive practice Thursday due to a hamstring injury, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran linebacker was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain Monday, and he was given a return timeframe of multiple weeks. Therefore, a Week 5 absence seems all but locked in, although the Ravens have yet to place Smith on injured reserve despite the expectation he'll miss multiple weeks.
