Not playing Friday
Bourne (lower leg) is not participating in warmups and will not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Commanders, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Bourne suffered a lower leg injury during last Friday's intrasquad scrimmage and hasn't practiced since. He'll look to get himself back on the practice field and be available for the Patriots' second exhibition game against the Vikings on Saturday, Aug. 16. The absences of Bourne and Stefon Diggs (knee) gives the likes of Ja'Lynn Polk, Javon Baker and Efton Chism more opportunities to get snaps with the offense during Friday's contest.

Bourne re-signed with New England as a free agent this spring, deciding to stick around under a new coaching staff. During his seven-year career, Bourne played his best football with the Patriots over the last three season. In 2021, he had 925 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns. After a down year in 2022, Bourne came back strong last season with 406 yards and four touchdowns before suffering an ACL tear in Week 8. He'll now focus on rehab ahead of his age-29 season, hoping to regain a starting spot in a WR group that added veteran K.J. Osborn and rookies Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker this offseason. The Patriots still lack a clear top target, but their WR depth looks a bit better than in Bourne's previous seasons, potentially leaving him with less volume even if he makes it back for Week 1 and claims a top-three role in an offense that will have either Drake Maye or Jacoby Brissett under center.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Competing for depth role
Bourne is expected to compete for one of the final spots on New England's wide receiver depth chart, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
Offseason signings Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins should have no trouble making the team, along with rookie third-round pick Kyle Williams and slot receiver DeMario Douglas, who led all Patriots wide receivers in receiving yards last season. The final couple spots on the depth chart will come down to a competition between Bourne, Kayshon Boutte and 2024 draft picks Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. Bourne had just 305 receiving yards in 2024, but his chances of making the team could be bolstered if Diggs, who is recovering from a knee injury, isn't ready to start the season.
