Eric Gray

25-Year-Old Running BackRB
New York Giants
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gray landed with the Giants as a 2023 fifth-round pick after exploding for 1,366 rushing yards and 11 TDs at Oklahoma in 2022. His college career was otherwise unremarkable, and a 4.62 40 at the Oklahoma pro day was especially disappointing for a RB with just average size for the position (5-10, 210). Gray was third or fourth on the Giants' depth chart for most of his rookie year, playing only 65 snaps on offense, but he should nonetheless have a chance to compete for the No. 2 RB this summer after the team opted against re-signing Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida. The Giants brought in Devin Singletary to be their starter, leaving Gray to compete with rookie fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy and a bunch of undrafted players for backup roles. Read Past Outlooks

Works far behind Tracy again Week 6
RBNew York Giants
October 14, 2024
Gray gained 13 yards on three carries in a loss to the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Devin Singletary was inactive for the second straight week due to a groin injury, but that didn't result in more work for Gray. In fact, the second-year back played half as many offensive snaps (13) as he did last week against Seattle and got four fewer touches. Meanwhile, rookie Tyrone Tracy continued to impress with 107 yards from scrimmage and a rushing touchdown while logging a workhorse-like 84 percent of New York's offensive snaps. Gray's modest 13 rushing yards more than doubled his previous season-high mark, which only indicates what a minor part of the Giants' ground game he's been this season. It remains to be seen if Singletary will be back Week 7 against the Eagles -- and whether Tracy has done enough to take over the team's lead-back role upon Singletary's return -- but either way, it doesn't appear that Gray is going to have a significant enough workload moving forward to be a factor in the vast majority of fantasy formats.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Although Gray is probably too small and slow to project as a long-term starter (4.62 pro day 40 at 5-10, 205), he demonstrated skill as a runner and even more as a receiver at Oklahoma and Tennessee, which projects him as a good off-the-bench running back and a potential starter in a pinch in the NFL. His lack of speed is probably why Gray was only occasionally explosive as a runner (5.1 YPC through his first three years), but as a pass catcher he was a clear standout (99 receptions for 827 yards and five touchdowns on 127 career targets). While he probably lacks the athletic tools to propel an offense, Gray's skill set is solid enough that he won't drag an offense down, either. That's all the Giants really need out of Gray as a 2023 fifth-round pick, and he's a strong candidate to take incumbent Matt Breida's role as the backup to Saquon Barkley.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could see bigger workload
RBNew York Giants
July 17, 2023
Gray figures to see increased reps during training camp, and potentially into the regular season, after Saquon Barkley and the Giants failed to reach an agreement Monday on a contract extension, Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Barkley has yet to sign his franchise tag tender, giving him the option of sitting out camp without incurring any penalties. That opens up reps for Gray, a 2023 fifth-round pick who appeared to be headed for occasional passing-down snaps as a rookie. If Barkley takes himself out of the picture with a holdout, however, Gray would be competing with lackluster veterans Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell for a more expansive role in the New York backfield, giving him a path to a significant workload.
