Joshua Dobbs

Joshua Dobbs

29-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
San Francisco 49ers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Dobbs certainly had his moments last season. Traded to Arizona late in camp, Dobbs started the first eight games for the Cardinals before being traded to Minnesota to replace an injured Kirk Cousins. He came off the bench days after the trade to lead the Vikings to victory and then won the next week as the starter, but that was the peak. By Week 14 he was benched, eventually demoted to No. 3. Dobbs signed with the 49ers in March to back up Brock Purdy, and if pressed into action likely will produce serviceable QB2 numbers similar to last year. Dobbs is plenty athletic (421 rushing yards, six TDs in 13 games) and perhaps coach Mike Shanahan’s scheme can help improve Dobbs’ accuracy after he ranked 30th in the league in on-target percentage (67.9). If nothing else, Dobbs can dump it off and let the 49ers’ many playmakers run for yards after the catch. Read Past Outlooks

Coach's Decision
December 12, 2024
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday night's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs is serving as the emergency third quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen, meaning he can't enter the game unless Purdy and Allen exit the game due to either injury or disqualification. The former Viking has yet to appear in a game this season, and he has been playing the emergency role for much of the campaign.

Dobbs had a strong August and may have somehow landed himself a Week 1 starting job. He spent most of the summer competing with rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson for Cleveland's backup QB job, with the Browns eventually choosing the rookie and shipping Dobbs off to Arizona for a late-round pick swap. The Cardinals then released veteran backup QB Colt McCoy a few days later, leaving Dobbs and Clayton Tune as the top options with Kyler Murray (knee) set to open the year on the PUP list (which rules him out for at least four games).
With Deshaun Watson in line to be suspended for the first 11 games of the season, either Dobbs or Josh Rosen are in line to handle the Browns' No. 2 QB duties behind Jacoby Brissett.
Dobbs has appeared in just seven games across his three seasons in the NFL, and he's completed 10 of his 17 passes for 45 yards and an interception. The 2017 fourth-rounder played in Pittsburgh's Week 17 matchup last season, but he'll face an uphill climb to secure a spot on the 53-man roster while competing with Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins in camp.
The 2017 fourth-rounder saw his first regular-season duty last season, but Dobbs remains entrenched as a backup for the Steelers, with Ben Roethlisberger having signed a two-year contract extension during the offseason. Dobbs enters training camp second on the team's depth chart, but for that slotting to stick, he'll have fend off second-year man Mason Rudolph.
Considered the possible quarterback of the future when he was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 draft, Dobbs never saw a regular-season snap for the Steelers as a rookie. Stuck behind Landry Jones, Dobbs now faces additional competition from Mason Rudolph, taken in the third round this year. It seems likely that either Dobbs or Jones will not make the roster coming out of camp this season.
The 6-3, 216 pound QB is a great athlete who also possesses tremendous smarts. As a result, Dobbs has the tools to make for an interesting developmental project behind Ben Roethlisberger. While his downfield accuracy was quite strong by the end of his Tennessee career, Dobbs never showed the natural ability to read defenses that you'd like to see in a quarterback. If his experiment at quarterback doesn't go well, Dobbs has the athleticism to transition to receiver. For now, he's slated for No. 3 QB duties in 2017 behind longtime Roethlisberger and backup Landry Jones, who has served in the Steelers' No. 2 role for each of the past two seasons and was signed to a two-year extension before the NFL draft.

Third on QB depth chart
QBSan Francisco 49ers
September 5, 2024
Dobbs will begin the season as San Francisco's third-string quarterback, as coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday that Kyle Allen will back up Brock Purdy against the Jets in Monday's regular-season opener, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs and Allen battled for the backup spot throughout training camp and the preseason, but the job ultimately went to Allen. Purdy went from third-stringer to starter in San Francisco's quarterback room just two years ago, so an injury-aided ascent up the depth chart isn't out of the question for Dobbs, but the mobile quarterback is fighting an uphill battle to see the field at all after starting 12 games in 2023, split between the Cardinals and Vikings.
