Melton made some waves in 2023, topping the 100-yard mark Week 17 and finding paydirt in a playoff game, but that late-season surge did not earn him a more prominent role in 2024, nor did his presence prevent the Packers from spending two of their top three draft picks on wideouts in April while adding Mecole Hardman to the receiver room. Melton is a favorite of the Green Bay coaching staff - they even gave him reps at cornerback this offseason to enhance his profile - but he'll enter training camp on the bubble, and even if he retains a roster spot his playing time likely will remain minimal. Melton played 26 of the Packers' 68 snaps on offense and recorded two catches for 28 yards on five targets in Monday's 10-7 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
After being converted from receiver to cornerback during the offseason, Melton was active for seven of the Packers' first eight games but had been deployed almost exclusively on special teams, logging just seven total snaps as a defender through the first nine weeks. However, perhaps due in part to being without Jayden Reed (collarbone) and Matthew Golden (shoulder) in Week 10 in addition to Romeo Doubs (chest) exiting the contest early, the Packers elected to break Melton in for his first reps on offense of 2025. Melton ended up finishing the night with a 38 percent offensive snap share, placing him behind Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Doubs but ahead of Malik Heath and Savion Williams in playing time at receiver. Head coach Matt LaFleur could shed more light on his plans for Melton moving forward when he addresses the media later this week, but the 26-year-old's usage on either offense or defense is likely to be highly dependent on the health of the Packers' receiver and cornerback groups.

After spending nearly a full year on Green Bay's practice squad, Melton finally got a chance to show what he could do last December. He certainly made the most of the opportunity, racking up 100 yards and a score Week 17 and finding pay dirt again in the divisional round of the playoffs. Just 25 years old and blessed with 4.34 speed, there's reason to be excited about Melton's prospects. However, Green Bay has four other promising receivers, and he will have a tough time surpassing any of them on the depth chart. He's the favorite for the fifth spot, though, as Green Bay's receiver room looks almost exactly like it did when the 2023 season came to an end.
