NFL Week 12 Line Movement

A quarterback is the only position that can significantly move an NFL point spread, and a top-tier QB can be worth up to seven or more points. For all other positions, the impact is minimal and usually less than a single point, unless multiple players on the same unit are injured. When a unit has multiple starters out, it is often overlooked in the handicapping world. OL, DL, secondary, and WR are the units that are impacted the most.

New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals

This game has one of the biggest line moves of the season, with the Bengals opening at -4.5 home favorites and now the Patriots are -9.0 road favorites -- good for a 13.5 point swing.

The reopen number was Pats -5.0 on 11/11, and it has just kept climbing all the way up to the current -9.0 number. Laying more than a touchdown on the road in the NFL is tough, and the Pats might be overpriced right now when you look at their DVOA compared to their record.

But the Bengals are not only without Joe Burrow (we think) and Ja'Marr Chase, and will likely miss Trey Hendrickson as well. Even still, I could see the Pats not being able to get to the pay window in this spot.

The total opened 47.5 and reopened all the way up to 50.0 and peaked at 51.0 before dropping back down to 49.5

Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans

Not to be outdone, we have another huge line move in this game with the Seahawks originally installed as -1.5 road favorites and currently sitting at a whopping -13.5 for a full 12-point line move. The line reopened at -11.5 and had crept up incrementally 0.5 points each day this week.

The reason why this line has moved so much is you have the team that has seen their power rating jump the most in Seattle, and the Titans have 1 win 22-21 against the Cardinals in which Arizona just gave the game away. Seattle's three losses have been by a combined 9 points.

The total opened at 44.5 and reopened at 43.0, but it has continued to drop about 0.5 points each day until the current number of 40.0.

Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

The Colts are on the line movement board nearly every week as their power rating has increased the most of any team, while the Chiefs are sitting at 5-5 with their season on the line.

The Chiefs originally opened as -9.0 home favorites, but reopened -4.5 and the money keep coming in on the Colts to the point where you have to look at the Chiefs from a value standpoint.

The total has jumped a full 5.0 points from 45.5 to 50.5 which is passing a few key numbers. The Colts have been flying over most game totals, but the Chiefs have been playing unders and they are at home.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Arizona Cardinals

Arizona originally opened as -3.0 home favorites, but the reopen had the Jags as -1.5 road favorites, and the money has come in on them, pushing this to -2.5. I have a hard time accepting a 5.5 point swing in favor of the Jags and making them road favorites despite the Cardinals' record.

This is all about the Jags' blowout of the Chargers and the 49ers blowing out the Cardinals. If things had gone according to plan, this line would probably be closer to a PICK.

The total has not moved very much, with an opening number of 47.5 and a low of 45.5 before climbing back up to the opener.
