Chinatrust Brothers (10-13) at Uni-President Lions (10-14)

Saturday, May 16, 5:05 AM EDT

Projected Starters

LHP Jose De Paula (0-5, 6.44 ERA) vs RHP Josh Roenicke (0-1, 12.38 ERA)

Game Preview

The three teams at the bottom of the CPBL standings continue to beat each other up, with the Brothers' 2-1 loss to the Lions in Friday's series opener meaning that the two teams are seven and 7.5 games back of the league-leading Monkeys, respectively. While that game was a rare CPBL pitcher's duel, the bats could reawaken in Saturday's contest. This game will again feature a pair of foreign starters, though neither has had much success this season. Brothers lefty Jose De Paula's 6.44 ERA is less bad than it looks given the league's offensive explosion this season, as it's not all that much worse than the league's overall 6.15 ERA, but it's still nowhere near good. Josh Roenicke had a delayed start to his season for the Lions and has appeared just twice, allowing 11 earned runs in just eight innings of work while striking out just three batters. That's a small sample, of course, and he was quite good in his first two seasons in Taiwan, recording a 3.17 ERA in 2018 and a 3.50 ERA last season.

Top Picks

Josh Roenicke, Lions: Roenicke has been inarguably quite poor this season, but his larger sample of 261.1 innings of success over the last two seasons should matter far more than his eight bad innings this year. Jose De Paula has a much larger track record of failure this year and comes in just half a credit cheaper, so it's worth betting on a bounceback performance from Roenicke here.

Kuo Fu-Lin, Lions: A Lions-centric lineup should focus on right-handed bats with the lefty De Paula starting for the opposition. Number two hitter Kuo fits that bill perfectly and should be under consideration for a captain spot thanks to his seven home runs so far this season.

Wu Tung-Jung, Brothers: Regardless of which team you're building your lineup around, cheap hitters who occupy key lineup spots are an important piece of the puzzle. That describes Wu well, as he costs just nine credits and has been batting second for the Brothers in recent games.

Chang Chi-Hao, Brothers: Chang makes a strong captain choice for those predicting a Brothers' victory in this contest. He's averaged 24 homers over the last three seasons and has four this year to go with a .358 batting average.
