Cavaliers, sans Mitchell, defeat Pistons on Friday night
The Cleveland Cavaliers held off a late comeback by the Detroit Pistons to take the 110-100 victory at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.

Despite being down All-Star Donovan Mitchell (knee) and Caris LeVert (elbow), the Cavaliers (39-20) were the ones to get off to a hot start Friday night and led 32-24 after the first quarter. Cleveland maintained that level of prowess on both sides of the floor as the Pistons (9-50) couldn’t get it going and found themselves down 15 at halftime. Things didn’t get much better in the second half as the Cavaliers led by as many as 26 points. Detroit attempted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to single digits late in the game. It wasn’t enough, however, as Cleveland managed to hang on down the stretch to improve its road record to 19-10, while the Pistons dropped to 4-25 at home. The Cavaliers were buoyed by their three-point shooting as they shot 18-for-41 from downtown compared to 10-for-36 by the Pistons.

Darius Garland led the way for the Cavaliers with 29 points -- including 8-for-12 from three -- five rebounds and four assists. Evan Mobley dominated with 22 points, 17 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals for his 19th double-double of the season. Max Strus added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Isaac Okoro got the start for Mitchell and finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Sam Merrill led the Cavs’ bench with 12 points and three rebounds. Jarrett Allen added nine points, 15 rebounds and two assists.

All five Pistons starters finished in double-digit scoring in Friday’s loss. Cade Cunnningham led the way with 21 points, three rebounds and 10 assists for his 11th double-double of the season. Jaden Ivey had 18 points, three rebounds and four assists, while Isaiah Stewart tallied 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Ausar Thompson filled the box score with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and five blocks. Jalen Duren finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two assists for his 32nd double-double of the season.

Both teams will be back in action Sunday. The Pistons travel to Orlando to take on the Magic, while the Cavaliers host the New York Knicks.
