Closer Watch

Oakland Athletics – The 2015 season has been one of the few marks on what has otherwise been a stellar decade for Billy Beane's club. Since he took over as general manager, Beane's well-chronicled successes in building a better lineup often overshadow his knack for masterfully putting together a ragtag bunch of castoffs and reclamation projects in the A's bullpen. Though it often produces some of the league's top relievers, injuries, trades and underperformance prevented Oakland from doing so this season. Headed into 2016, Sean Doolittle and Drew Pomeranz are the only two players who seem to have locked up late-inning relief roles. That leaves the door wide open for pitchers like 25-year-old Ryan Dull to prove themselves as September call-ups. With nothing left to prove itself and the ever-present injury risk Doolittle represents, Oakland might want to see what it has in Dull. Pomeranz came up as a starter and it remains to be seen how the team views him moving forward. Monitor the situation and be ready to pounce on Pomeranz – or even Dull – should an unexpected ninth-inning situation arise.

Recommended Pickup

Colby Rasmus, OF, HOU – It might sound like an act of desperation. That's exactly what adding the streaky Astros slugger would be. In September, the difference between bringing home a league championship and finishing as the first loser is often razor thin. Second place teams whose power numbers are lagging might be able to sacrifice across-the-board production from one key player in order to secure a handful of bombs that might give them enough to win the category. Owned in just 5 percent of Yahoo leagues, the 29-year-old outfielder provides power potential and little else. If he gets hot during the Astros' stretch run, he could help propel them – and fantasy owners – to a division title.

Other Recent Recommendations:Marcus Stroman, Vidal Nuno, Carl Crawford, Tanner Roark, Joe Panik and Javier Baez.
