Taking on Gutierrez in March
BantamweightUFC
March 2, 2025
Castaneda will fight Chris Gutierrez at UFC 313 in Las Vegas on March 8, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda will look to bounce back from his most recent defeat at the hands of Daniel Marcos in June. The 33-year-old American will take a reach advantage into the fight, though Gutierrez will carry an advantage in height. Castaneda will likely be looking to use the ground game against the fellow Texan, as he boasts a perfect 7-0 professional record in submission finishes. He will have to remain weary of his opponent's stopping power, however, as Gutierrez holds a perfect 9-0 professional record in KO/TKO finishes.

UFC Vegas bout cancelled
BantamweightUFC
February 28, 2025
Castaneda (undisclosed) will no longer take on Douglas Silva de Andrade in a Bantamweight bout at UFC Vegas 103, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
It was not made immediately clear why the fight was cancelled, but it becomes the second bout to be scratched from the UFC Vegas 103 card, joining the De La Rosa v. Carolina fight. It's a tough break for both fighters, who were both looking to bounce back from a loss.
Next fight scheduled
BantamweightUFC
January 24, 2025
Castaneda will fight Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC Vegas 103 on March 1, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda dropped his lone fight of 2024 to Daniel Marcos in June, but he'll look to get back in the win column against his new 39-year-old opponent. Silva de Andrade also suffered a loss in his most recent fight at the hands of Miles Johns, whom Castaneda defeated back in 2022.
Inconsistent ways continue
BantamweightUFC
June 8, 2024
Castaneda lost to Daniel Marcos via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
ANALYSIS
It was a dreadful performance from Castaneda in what was projected to be a close bout. He was unable to match the volume of Marcos on the feet. The latter closed with a 101-68 edge in terms of total strikes landed, in addition to scoring the lone knockdown of the bout. Castaneda tried to get his wrestling game going, but landed only 1-of-5 takedown attempts. A member of the UFC roster for nearly four years now, Castaneda has been up and down during his time with the company. The 32-year-old Minnesota native falls to 4-3 in the UFC with this setback.
Scheduled against undefeated pro
BantamweightUFC
April 17, 2024
Castaneda is scheduled to compete against Daniel Marcos in a bantamweight fight at the UFC Apex's June 8 event, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda will look to continue his winning ways in 2024. 2023 was a bounce-back year for the 32-year-old bantamweight, who defeated Muin Gafurov and Kyung Ho Kang then.
Takes decision at MSG
BantamweightUFC
November 11, 2023
Castaneda defeated Kyung Ho Kang via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC 295 on Saturday in New York City.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda deserves full marks for simply outworking Kang in what, on paper, looked like a close bout. John closed with a 119-88 edge in total strikes landed, in addition to connecting on 3-of-8 takedown attempts. He was seemingly always in Kang's face despite the latter being the considerably bigger man. The first round was close, but the final 10 minutes were not. Set to turn 32 years of age in mid-December, Castaneda has quietly won four of five dating back to February 2021.
