2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mathieu totaled 166 tackles while playing nearly every defensive snap during his first two campaigns in New Orleans, resulting in a new two-year, $13 million deal this offseason. While his numbers dipped somewhat last season, the 32-year-old should continue to headline the Saints' secondary. Second-year pro Jordan Howden likely will start at strong safety, and the team's next most-experienced safety is Will Harris, who primarily played on special teams for the Lions last year. Expect Mathieu again to take on a heavy workload in 2024. Read Past Outlooks
Past illness
Mathieu (illness) was listed as a full practice participant Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathieu didn't practice Wednesday while battling an illness, but it appears he's over the issue as he was able to practice without limitations Thursday. Barring any setbacks, the 2013 third-round pick should be good to go for Sunday's game against the Panthers. Mathieu's two interceptions through eight regular-season outings is second most on the Saints behind Paulson Adebo (leg).

Mathieu set a new career high in tackles (91) while playing all 17 games during his first season with New Orleans in 2022. It's possible his production was boosted by playing in a Saints secondary that was banged up all season, including starting free safety Marcus Maye and top cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who missed seven and 10 games, respectively. Nevertheless, Mathieu is a central piece in New Orleans' defense, and he has not missed more than one game in a season since 2016. The three-time All-Pro should remain productive heading into his age-31 season in 2023.
