Tyrann Mathieu

2024 Defense Projections
Mathieu will enter the 2013 NFL Draft, ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mathieu might measure in under 5-foot-9 and was listed at 180 pounds in college, and his lack of size is compounded by intense character issues (drug use specifically) as well as a lack of standout athleticism. Mathieu might not have even 4.50 speed, so he doesn't figure to shine in timed drills. With that said, before he was kicked off the LSU team prior to the 2012 season, Mathieu showed instincts and playmaking skills that were arguably unparalleled. He somehow turned himself into an utterly devastating slot corner with skill set possessing many traits typically seen in 3-4 outside linebackers. That's not to say he ever sealed an edge in run defense, but Mathieu showed an ability to break past blockers and wreak havoc in the backfield to a downright unreasonable extent, totaling 133 tackles (16 for a loss) and six sacks in 26 games. Another standout aspect of Mathieu's game was his ability to force fumbles -- he forced 11 fumbles in those 26 games. He also intercepted four passes and returned two punts for touchdowns (15.6 yards per return). With a year off of football and a marijuana-related arrest in October -- even after he was kicked off the LSU team -- the NFL will understandably have a significant amount of skepticism regarding Mathieu's reliability. It's difficult to see him going before the fourth round, and many teams figure to grade him lower than that.
