2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Four members of the 2021 QB class are on their third team this season, including the No. 3 overall pick in that draft, Lance. The 25-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Chargers this offseason, but given the team also re-signed veteran Taylor Heinicke on a larger deal, it seems likely Lance will continue to be viewed as a developmental prospect who admittedly has intriguing upside as a running threat. RANKS
Good use of starting opportunity
Lance completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding three rushes for eight yards during the Chargers' 34-7 preseason win over the Lions in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
The oft-maligned 2021 third overall pick of the 49ers is set to get a long look from his third NFL team this summer, and head coach Jim Harbaugh wasted no time getting Lance into extended game action. The strong-armed North Dakota State product put together an encouraging body of work overall and connected with Will Dissly (five yards) and KeAndre Lambert-Smith (15 yards) for his pair of scoring tosses in the first and second quarter, respectively. Lance remained in the game for the first three quarters, leading the Chargers to 27 points overall and also seeing a third potential TD pass of nine yards to Dalevon Campbell overturned via replay late in the third quarter. Lance certainly didn't hurt his case for a roster spot with Thursday's performance, but Taylor Heinicke will likely get his chance to state his claim to hang on to the No. 2 role in coming preseason games.

The Cowboys took a flyer on Lance just before Week 1 last year, trading a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for the 2021 third overall pick. Lance, though, not only never took a snap, he never made the active roster, suiting up only as the emergency third-sting QB every game. If his accuracy and anticipation have caught up to his physical gifts, perhaps Lance can beat out Cooper Rush to back up Dak Prescott this season. At 6-4, 226, Lance has both size and a strong arm, and his rushing ability adds to his potential. Lance, 24, is still young -- younger than rookie QBs Bo Nix and Michael Penix, n fact -- which is also why the Cowboys were willing to pay his $4.25 roster bonus for 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Links up with Chargers
Lance agreed to a one-year deal with the Chargers on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Schefter reports the deal is worth up to $6.2 million, a solid figure for a quarterback that's been long on potential but very short on opportunity over his first four seasons. Lance saw regular-season action for the first time since 2022 last season with the Cowboys, completing 25 of 41 passes for 266 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and adding 41 rushing yards on 11 carries over four contests. In Los Angeles, he should have a chance to unseat Taylor Heinicke for the primary backup role behind Justin Herbert during training camp.
