Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mariota signed a one-year contract with Washington for a second straight offseason, electing to stick around as Jayden Daniels' backup after thriving in the two games Daniels left early last season. Mariota threw two touchdown passes in both of those games, leading the Commanders to victory and cementing himself as one of the league's better backup QBs. He might even have fantasy value in single-QB fantasy leagues if Daniels were to miss time, as Mariota still offers some running ability at age 31. Read Past Outlooks

Another spot start in place of Daniels
Mariota will start Monday's game in Kansas City after coach Dan Quinn ruled out Jayden Daniels (hamstring) on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Mariota entered in place of Daniels early in the second half of this past Sunday's eventual loss at Dallas, and the latter's low-grade right hamstring strain will keep him out at least one contest. In two starts plus roughly one more half of play this season, Mariota has completed 35 of 58 passes for 426 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, turned 10 carries into 94 yards and one more TD and lost his only fumble.

After signing a one-year deal with Washington in March, Mariota will back up No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels. In Mariota's last two years as a Week 1 starter -- 2019 in Tennessee and 2022 in Atlanta -- he lost the job before the season was out. Last season was spent backing up Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Mariota is a capable game manager, but he takes a lot of sacks and struggles with downfield accuracy, and he's often been plagued by injuries during his 10-year career. He's still mobile, though, so perhaps his rushing ability will lead to fantasy value if he ends up filling in for Daniels at some point.

Officially drawing Week 8 start
Mariota will start Monday night's game against the Chiefs due to Jayden Daniels having been ruled out because of a hamstring injury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mariota will be drawing his third start of the season after also having helmed the Commanders' offense in Weeks 3 and 4 when Daniels was sidelined with a sprained knee. Mariota completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 363 yards with a 3:1 TD:INT and an 8-60-1 rushing line during that pair of contests, but he struggled while completing four of 10 passes for 63 yards with no touchdowns and a pick-six while adding two rushes for 34 yards in emergency duty against Dallas in Week 7.
