Reverts to practice squad
Cager reverted to the Commanders' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Cager was brought up by the Commanders to add depth at tight end due to the absence of Colson Yankoff (ankle), though the former played just one snap on offense during Saturday's loss to the Eagles. It was Cager's first appearance of the 2025 regular season, and he's eligible to be elevated from the practice squad twice more this season.

Darren Waller's retirement in the offseason cracked open a door for Cager to potentially compete for increased playing time in 2024, as neither third-year tight end Daniel Bellinger nor rookie Theo Johnson have a stranglehold on the starting role. However, multiple injuries during training camp have limited Cager's ability to make an impression and may impact his chance of making the roster altogether. If he does avoid getting cut, Cager seems certain to be third on the pecking order behind Bellinger and Johnson, at least at the start of the campaign.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could step up with Waller done
Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic lists Cager as a candidate to see more targets following Darren Waller's retirement, along with Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson.
ANALYSIS
Bellinger and Johnson are the two obvious candidates to fill the gap at tight end created by Waller's retirement, but Cager has also been getting frequent opportunities throughout OTAs and minicamp. Cager began his NFL career as a wide receiver but converted to tight end in 2022. Bellinger has just 523 yards and two touchdowns through two seasons, while Johnson is a rookie fourth-round pick, so the 6-foot-5 Cager has a chance to emerge as the best pass catcher out of the group.
