2025 Fantasy Outlook
Fields started six games for the Steelers last season, but he hit the bench shortly after Russell Wilson got healthy. Fields' completion percentage was a career-high 65.8 (20th among 43 QBs with at least 160 attempts), but his on-target percentage increased only minimally while his average target depth was a career-low 7.7 yards. He completed passes at a higher rate because more of them were short attempts (a career-high 68.3 percent traveled less than 10 yards downfield). He still has his legs, though. Fields averaged 38.5 rushing yards in his six starts, with five passing TDs and five rushing scores -- enough to make him fantasy's QB6 through Week 6. He'll now have a chance to start for the Jets, who gave him a two-year, $40 million deal. Fields has target-hog Garrett Wilson as his No. 1 WR, although Wilson’s high-volume role since entering the league in 2022 (469 targets, 3rd in NFL) is partly the result of a lack of alternatives in the Jets offense. That’s the case again, with Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds and Malachi Corley likely competing for starting jobs, though second-round pick Mason Taylor offers upside at tight end. The gameplan should be more dynamic under new OC Tanner Engstrand, formerly the Lions' pass game coordinator, but there's no guarantee Fields keeps the starting job all season over veteran backup Tyrod Taylor. So long as he's starting, Fields' rushing production will be enough for high-end QB2 value, at the very least, with upside for QB1 production if the Jets emphasize his wheels with frequent designed runs. Starters suiting up Saturday
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Thursday that Fields (toe) will suit up for Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Glenn didn't say how much run New York's starting units will get Saturday, so it remains to be seen whether Fields and company will suit up for more than a few drives, but at this stage in the preseason it's uncommon for starters to handle more than a quarter. Fields has been a full participant in 11-on-11 drills since suffering a dislocated toe in practice late July, albeit while wearing a plastic shield on his cleat, but there now appear to be no tangible limitations regarding his activity level. Rich Cimini of ESPN reports that the Jets' passing game has struggled to find its groove throughout the early stages of training camp, so Saturday's preseason opener will represent a chance for Fields to alleviate those concerns.

Armed with the first pick in this year’s draft, the Bears cut bait on Fields, the 11th overall pick from 2021, and traded him to the Steelers for a mere sixth-rounder. Fields is expected to back up Russell Wilson, though the team hasn't given any guarantees for the Week 1 starting job, with coach Mike Tomlin only saying that Wilson has "pole position." The biggest problem for Fields is that his accuracy has not improved much through three years. Last season, he ranked 28th in the league in on-target percentage (68.1) and 29th in completion percentage (61.4). His downfield passing, though, greatly improved (thank you, DJ Moore). Not only did Fields look downfield often -- his average target depth was 8.0 yards (11th), throwing deep on 14.3 percent of attempts (2nd) -- he was on target with 51.9 percent of his attempts of 20-plus yards (11th) with seven TDs and two INTs. Those are better numbers than Wilson’s, by the way. Fields’ fantasy value, though, is built on rushing. Despite missing four and a half games with a thumb injury, he was second among QBs with 657 rushing yards and ran for four scores. Fields finished as QB6 the year prior and has more potential fantasy value than Wilson, but the 25-year-old might not get the chance to show it in 2024, the final season of his rookie contract.

Hoping to play in preseason
Fields said that he hopes to play in the preseason, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Fields has gotten inconsistent reviews during training camp, and his performance during any preseason games won't necessarily provide any clarity in regard to his readiness for the regular season, but it would at least give Fields some live reps in his new offense. The Jets have yet to announce their preseason plans for Fields.
