The Cowboys acquired Phillips and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick from the Giants on Wednesday in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After signing Phillips in the offseason, the Giants likely didn't envision him making the final 53-man roster, so the organization elected to pawn him off on a division rival. Phillips turns 32 years old next month and has 120 games of NFL experience, including 62 starts. He'll provide depth on the interior of the defensive line.

Talent and athleticism have never been a question with Phillips, but his performance has never met expectations. Phillips missed three games last year due to an injury sustained in the season opener, but has apparently returned to full health. The 2015 second-rounder will see his biggest opportunity in Miami yet with Ndamukong Suh gone, but it remains to be seen whether or not the 25-year-old will be able to capitalize on that opportunity.
During his first two seasons in Miami Phillips recorded 2.5 sacks and 42 tackles, hardly overwhelming numbers but he is expected to get first crack at the starting defensive tackle job in training camp opposite Ndamukong Suh.
The Dolphins will play it slow with Phillips, their second round pick in the 2015 NFL Entry Draft. They will allow him to develop at his own pace behind Ndamukong Suh, Earl Mitchell, and C.J. Mosley.

Defensive tackle Mazi Smith said Thursday that he's excited for the addition of Phillips, noting that he has a lot of respect for the 11-year veteran, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cowboys acquired Phillips from the Giants on Wednesday to provide depth at defensive tackle behind Smith and Osa Odighizuwa. Smith relayed that Phillips' addition to Dallas' defensive front brings in much-needed competition and pushes the group to another level where "iron sharpens iron." Phillips spent the last two years with the Bills, accumulating 35 tackles, including 4.0 sacks, and seven passes defended across 26 regular-season contests.
