D.J. Wonnum

27-Year-Old LinebackerLB
Carolina Panthers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Wonnum is entering the final season of the two-year, $12.5 million deal that he signed with Carolina last offseason. Injuries held the 27-year-old to just eight games in 2024, during which he recorded 37 total tackles, including 4.0 sacks, one pass defense and one forced fumble. While on the field, Wonnum was clearly the Panthers' most productive edge rusher last year. Don't be surprised if the South Carolina product leads the team in sacks in 2025, as he's expected to start opposite 2025 second-round pick Nic Scourton in the Panthers' edge-rush corps. Wonnum (back) finished Friday's 30-10 preseason loss against the Browns with one assisted tackle.
ANALYSIS
Wonnum worked with the first-team defense and ended up playing 11 snaps. The 2020 fourth-rounder was tending to a back injury during the offseason, but he appears past the issue given his ability to play Friday. Wonnum missed the first nine games of the 2024 regular season due to a lingering quadriceps injury but managed to finish with 37 tackles (18 solo), including 4.0 sacks, one pass defense and one forced fumble across eight games. The Panthers' preseason depth chart has Wonnum starting at outside linebacker alongside Patrick Jones, Trevin Wallace and Christian Rozeboom.

After trading outside linebacker Brian Burnes to the Giants in March, the Panthers made it a priority to fortify a seemingly weak room of pass rushers by adding both Wonnum and Jadeveon Clowney in free agency. Wonnum is coming off the most productive season of his young career, tallying 62 tackles, including 8.0 sacks, 38 pressures and seven passes defended in 15 games with the Vikings. He'll line up opposite Clowney for the Panthers defense in 2024, and the two should make an impact as a solid pass-rushing duo.
After starting 16 games in 2021, Wonnum saw his role decreased for the Vikings last season. He totaled 38 tackles, including four sacks, while playing 16 games and starting just one. It looks like he will again play a rotational on the edge in 2023.
Wonnum moved into a starting role after Danielle Hunter's season-ending pectoral injury Week 8 last year and responded with 33 tackles and seven sacks over his final 10 games. He'll move to a reserve role behind Hunter and newcomer Za'Darius Smith as an edge rusher in the Vikings' new 3-4 defense, but Wonnum could find his role grow since both Hunter and Smith were not able to stay healthy in 2021.
The 2020 fourth-round draft pick will compete for a starting defensive end role this summer after a promising rookie season that saw him post three sacks and get increasing playing time later in the year.

Might begin camp on PUP list
LBCarolina Panthers
June 17, 2024
Wonnum has missed the Panthers' offseason program while dealing with complications from quadriceps surgery, and he appears likely to begin training camp on the PUP list, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old edge rusher was signed as a free agent in the offseason after recording eight sacks and a career-high 62 tackles with the Vikings in 2023. Wonnum has yet to practice with his new club, however, putting his availability for camp in serious doubt. He still has time to get healthy prior to Week 1, but he'll need to show progress soon.
