Derek Stingley

23-Year-Old CornerbackCB
Houston Texans
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The only knock on Stingley is staying healthy, a trait some describe as a skill akin to on-field abilities. He's played 20 of a possible 34 regular-season games since being drafted in 2022. When available in 2023, he led Houston's cornerbacks in coverage (84.9 grade per PFF) and tied for the team lead with five interceptions over 11 games. Stingley's reception percentage (53.8 percent) also led the team. The 23-year-old has no health issues entering the summer season and is set to return as the top cover corner on the Texans' roster. Busy as a tackler Sunday
CBHouston Texans
October 8, 2024
Stingley recorded seven tackles (four solo) and a pass defensed during Sunday's 23-20 win versus the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Stingley hadn't posted seven tackles in a single game since Week 5 of his rookie year back in 2022, so Sunday's contest was an outlier for him in that regard. That fact makes him hard to trust as an IDP option in most formats despite his clearly being a strong asset for the Texans.

Stingley gets an incomplete grade for the 2022 season, as the rookie first-round pick's season ended after Week 10. The LSU product stepped immediately into the starting lineup Week 1 and was picked on heavily early. Stingley had a particularly bad day against the Broncos in Week 2, which dragged down his coverage grade (49.9, 187th per Pro Football Focus). However, after the first five weeks, opponents stopped throwing as much at the cornerback, who did not cede a touchdown over nearly 600 snaps. Overall, he logged 43 tackles, an interception, five passes broken up and a sack in nine games.
During the offseason, former defensive coordinator and current head coach Lovie Smith stated the Texans needed to improve at cornerback, and the organization followed through on that need. First came the signing of free agent Steve Nelson, a seven-year veteran. Joining him will be Stingley, taken third overall in the draft. The 6-1, 195-pounder was an impressive press-cover corner at LSU since joining the program as an 18-year-old and led the SEC in passes defensed and interceptions as a freshman in 2019. The knocks on him are the injuries that forced him to miss 11 games over his final two years with the Tigers, and NFL scouts have questioned is willingness as a run stopper. Stingley played both sides of the field and some slot while at LSU, and Smith told him on draft night that he'll be lining up against opponents' top receivers.

Seeing field at a 'faster rate'
CBHouston Texans
June 24, 2023
Stingley, who was drafted by the Texans with the third overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has seen a difference both physically and mentally in the offseason as he enters his second year in the league, Coral Smith of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stingley had a strong start to his rookie season, totalling 43 tackles, one sack and one interception in nine games before missing the second half of the season with a strained hamstring that eventually landed him on injured reserve. He's devoted this offseason to conditioning and building muscle to be more durable, working with conditioning coach Mike Eubanks every day. Stingley and fellow safety Jalen Pitre -- also selected in the 2022 NFL Draft -- were one of the few areas of strength for the Texans last season as the team finished 10th in passing defense. The Texans enter the 2023 season led by new head coach DeMeco Ryans and young talent on both sides of the ball, including Stingley and 2023 first-round draft picks C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson, in hopes that they can improve on their three-win 2022 season.
