2025 Fantasy Outlook
A second-round pick, Shough (pronounced “shuck”) was the third QB selected in this year’s draft. He was plagued by injuries in his seven-year college career, finally staying healthy enough last season to throw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns at Louisville. He completed only 62.7 percent of his passes, making accuracy a concern, especially downfield. At 6-foot-5, 219 pounds, Shough has good size with a strong arm and solid mechanics, but he's not as mobile as his 4.61 40 might seem to suggest. He’ll also turn 26 a few weeks into the season, which likely limits his room for growth. Even so, he’s the probable Week 1 starter after Derek Carr abruptly retired in May. The Saints likely will look into signing a veteran, as Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener were the only QBs on the roster at the time of Carr's retirement. If Shough finds himself under center, he’ll have a few good receiving options, namely Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Alvin Kamara likely will handle a lot of the workload for new head coach Kellen Moore, who likes to lean on his running backs, confining Shough to a game-manager role. Read Past Outlooks

Opportunity for QB1 role as rookie
Shough is lined up to be the Saints' starting quarterback next season after Derek Carr (shoulder) announced his retirement Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming into the weekend, there were already questions about Carr's potential availability for the 2025 campaign due to the veteran quarterback's shoulder issue, and his decision to retire has left the Saints with a QB room featuring Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. Rattler struggled as a rookie last year, completing just 57 percent of his passes while posting a 4:5 TD:INT, but he did rush for 146 yards on just 18 carries and could get a chance to begin the season as the starter behind center given that he is the most experienced of the group. However, Shough should at least have the opportunity to battle for the Week 1 starting role and may be the favorite for the job after the Saints took him the second round of April's NFL Draft. Though he's an NFL rookie, Shough is 26 years old, so New Orleans has little incentive to stash him on the bench for development purposes, but there's always a possibility the organization brings in a more experienced quarterback via free agency or trade.

Carr's retirement opens door
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Saturday that Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener will compete for the starting quarterback job during camp in the wake of Derek Carr's retirement, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Shough had already been viewed as likely to start for a significant portion of the season when it was believed Carr would miss part of the campaign due to shoulder surgery. With Carr instead opting to move on from the NFL altogether, the door is open for Shough to show the Saints he's capable of starting out of the gate after being drafted 40th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Louisville. The 25-year-old rookie will compete in training camp against the 24-year-old Rattler and 26-year-old Haener.
