Waiver Wire Watch: Players to Pick Up Week 6
Throughout the college football season, I'll pick two guys from every conference who either caught my eye in the previous week or who have a favorable match-up in the near future. As always, I'll get to any questions or comments you have in the comments section below.
AAC
Ryquell Armstead, RB, Temple
In Temple's shootout with Boston College, Armstead was the best player on the field while averaging 7.1 yards per carry and four touchdowns on 24 carries. More importantly, it was his fourth straight 100-yard performance and third straight game with at least 24 carries. That kind of volume means he should be owned in far more leagues than he actually is. With an upcoming matchup with East Carolina and considering that the AAC doesn't have a lot of top notch defenses, Armstead is one of my top recommendations this week.
Keith Corbin, WR, Houston
The Cougars were on a bye last week, meaning that Corbin is likely still floating out there to be taken on the waiver wire. Teammate Marquez Stevenson was snatched up earlier this year and Corbin is the next best thing available. Corbin has 17 catches for 286 yards and four touchdowns which is a bit better than Courtney Lark's 18 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Corbin can be deployed versus Tulsa and East Carolina for the next two weeks.

Ryan Finley, QB, NC State

ACC
Ryan Finley, QB, NC State
Not many in the college game are talking about Finley, but I can ensure you that NFL scouts are buzzing about him. Through four games, he hasn't done much to hurt his draft stock with eight touchdowns and just one interception. I'm also not sure why he's not owned in more fantasy leagues with at least 22 fantasy points in each game this season. The ACC conference is one of the weaker Power 5 conferences, thus I think Finley will be just fine for the rest of the season.
Jamal Custis, WR, Syracuse
I'll admit that I was skeptical on the Orange until I watched them go into Death Valley and legitimately compete with Clemson. Custis has been the top target in the offense with 22 catches for 360 yards and three touchdowns. I'm not sure Custis is much better than Devin Butler or Sean Riley, but he has been Eric Dungey's favorite receiver thus far. UCF had no problems passing the ball versus Pittsburgh, so I do expect Syracuse to have a decent day through the air in Week 6.
BIG 12
Marcus Simms, WR, West Virginia
A repeat recommendation from last week, Simms still isn't owned in that many leagues. He was one of Grier's top targets this past weekend with nine catches for 138 yards and a score. The Mountaineers are committed to keeping Will Grier as a Heisman candidate which means that Simms will have an opportunity to shine each and every week. There's no reason Gary Jennings, David Sills and Simms can't all have big games versus a bad Kansas defense.
Keaontay Ingram, RB, Texas
I'm taking a big chance on this one; however, I think Ingram is a superstar in the making and it's possible he has his breakout game versus Oklahoma. A hip injury slowed the true freshman a couple of weeks ago, but he looked to be back to full speed versus Kansas State with 10 carries for 68 yards and five catches for 27 yards. More importantly, Texas chose to use Ingram for a game-clinching first down opposed to senior transfer Tre Watson. Ingram will only get better with each game and should be rostered in most leagues by the end of the year.
BIG TEN
Reggie Corbin, RB, Illinois
Not often will I recommend anyone from the Fighting Illini, however, I'm willing to roll the dice this week against Rutgers. To be honest though, Corbin hasn't been half bad with double digit fantasy scores in all four games this season. He's averaging 6.8 yards per carry with 327 yards and four touchdowns on 48 carries to go along with seven catches for 38 yards. Even though he'll split carries with Mike Epstein, I like Corbin who most likely has a high fantasy floor in Week 6.
Jake Ferguson, TE, Wisconsin
Setting aside the fact that Ferguson is Barry Alvarez's grandson (don't worry, the telecast will mention it a million times), he's been a solid contributor in the Badgers' offense with 12 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown. Wisconsin has a rich history of pass-catching tight ends, so I wouldn't expect his ascension to stop anytime soon. Nebraska hasn't been able to stop anyone defensively which means that Ferguson will be good for another handful of catches and quite possibly a score.
CONFERENCE USA
Cordale Grundy, QB, UTSA
The Roadrunners' signal caller was the majority of their offense in a 30-21 win over UTEP with three total touchdowns. His dual-threat ability should give him enough upside against a bad Rice defense to make him a worthy spot start this week. I wouldn't plan on using him the rest of the season as they will struggle against future opponents.
A.J. Erdely, QB, UAB
Erdely is a dependable dual-threat quarterback who can be started pretty much every week. He's as consistent as they come with a rushing score in three of four games this season and at least 20 fantasy points in all four of his contests. The Blazers want to prove they are for real in the conference and will lean on Erdely and their running back Spencer Brown to do so. Pick these guys up a week early before they have their Week 7 game with Rice.
MAC
Jayden Reed, WR, Western Michigan
The freshman has notched 14 catches for 238 yards and five touchdowns in his past two games. Reed and quarterback Jon Wassink are forming quite the connection and should be rather productive as the conference season progresses. Even when they go up against some of the better MAC teams, Reed should have a handful of targets which will keep most fantasy owners satisfied.
A.J. Ouellette, RB, Ohio
I've already been wideout Papi White's biggest cheerleader, so I'll pivot to Ouellette who has also been productive as the Bobcats' lead back. He'll always have to deal with quarterback Nathan Rourke taking on most of the rushing attempts, but his 84 total yards and two touchdowns versus UMass in Week 5 was worth around 20 fantasy points. Ohio should light up the scoreboard versus Kent State which will mean that Ouellette should have a decent amount of opportunities.
MOUNTAIN WEST
Jordan Mims, RB, Fresno State
If you stayed up late and watched Mims versus Toledo, you were treated to a dominant performance which included a touchdown on the ground and a touchdown through the air. His recent versatility is a useful weapon with quarterback Marcus McMaryion and wide receiver KeeSean Johnson already being the primary worry for opposing defenses. The Bulldogs should continue to be a contender in the conference and Mims is available in almost all fantasy leagues.
Josh Love, QB, San Jose St
If Love can complete 28 of 49 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns versus Hawaii, he should be able to do something similar versus Colorado State. Opposing team have had their fair share of success against the Rams, especially on the offensive end. Josh Oliver appears to be the Spartans top receiver with 27 catches for 336 yards and two touchdowns.
PAC-12
Easop Winston Jr., WR, Washington St: The Cougars opponent in Week 6, Oregon State, have given up something like a million rushing yards this season, yet I'm going to recommend a receiver. Washington State won a tough matchup with Utah with a net of zero rushing yards despite having a talented running back in James Williams. Whether there are huge running lanes or not, Winston has a touchdown in four of five games this year. I wouldn't bet against Mike Leach throwing the ball just for fun.
Jake Browning, QB, Washington
Browning finally looked like the quarterback we all thought he was while completing 23 of 25 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown in addition to a rushing score in a dominant 35-7 win over BYU. There aren't a lot of good defenses in the Pac-12, so I would expect a similar stat line from Browning in most of his games going forward. It should be even better versus UCLA this week.
SEC
Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama: Who knew there would come a day where the Alabama offense is scarier than their defense? While Jerry Jeudy remains the most lethal target for Tua Tagovailoa, Ruggs is emerging as a nice complement receiver with 16 catches for 296 yards and five touchdowns so far this season. What I also like about Ruggs is that he saw a touchdown from Tua and Jalen Hurts last week, increasing the chance that he will score versus Arkansas regardless of who is running the offense at quarterback.
DaMarkus Lodge, WR, Ole Miss
I wouldn't put too much stock in the Rebels game with LSU as their opponent in Week 6, Louisiana-Monroe, won't have near the firepower as the Tigers did. Teammates A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf are likely already owned, yet I think Lodge is just as likely to have the best game of the trio this week. Either way, Jordan Ta'amu should have a monster week after tough sledding versus LSU and Alabama in two of the last three weeks.
SUN BELT
Jabir Daughtry-Frye & B.J. Smith, RB, Troy
I'm recommending both Daughtry-Frye and Smith because I think they both will have touchdowns against Georgia State. They combined for 243 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in a 45-21 win over Coastal Carolina in Week 5. Smith has more reliable volume, but Daughtry-Frye has more upside as shown in a 74-yard touchdown sprint last week. While I was indeed wrong about Louisiana-Monroe's running back versus Georgia State in Week 5, I don't think I'll be wrong this week.
Shai Werts, QB, Georgia Southern
Take away the Clemson game and Werts has at least 24 fantasy points in three different games, including two 100-yard rushing performances. Even when accounting for the Clemson game, Werts has at least one rushing score in every game this season. What he does through the air is only a bonus with three passing touchdowns. Georgia Southern is a contender in the Sun Belt and Werts should be a worthy fantasy play with upcoming games versus South Alabama, Texas State and New Mexico State.
INDEPENDENTS
Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame
Williams rushed for a career-high 161 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in Saturday's 38-17 drubbing of Stanford. Williams is most likely available in your fantasy league because it was his first game after missing the first four of the season for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. Notre Dame's offense all of sudden looks unstoppable with Williams and quarterback Ian Book who has 10 total touchdowns in just two starts.
DEFENSE RECOMMENDATIONS
Mississippi (vs. Louisiana-Monroe): No one would fathom starting the Rebels' defense on any other week, but this week they play a Warhawks team who could only score 14 points on a bad Georgia State team in Week 5.
Troy (vs. Georgia State): Speaking of the Panthers of Georgia State, they should return to normalcy with a bad week against the Trojans.
West Virginia (vs. Kansas): Will Grier and the offense gets all the attention, but the Mountaineers' defense is a big reason they are undefeated.
Buffalo (vs. Central Michigan): The Chippewas' offense is among the worst in the nation and it should be contained by the Bulls.
