Stone Garrett

29-Year-Old DHDH
Washington Nationals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Garrett was carving out a role as a short-side platoon player with the Nationals in 2023 when he put up an .839 OPS and slugged seven homers in 142 plate appearances versus left-handed pitching. Unfortunately, his season ended in August with a fractured ankle and the recovery dragged into the start of the 2024 campaign. A .675 OPS at Triple-A Rochester hinted that Garrett wasn't feeling like himself post-surgery and it wasn't until late September when the Nationals finally called him up. Garrett could still turn into a valuable piece for the Nationals, but he is now 29 and his role on the 2025 club looks cloudy. Read Past Outlooks

Homer, three hits in season debut
DHWashington Nationals
September 27, 2024
Garrett went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double, an additional run scored and an additional RBI in Friday's 9-1 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Garrett had to wait until the last week of the season to rejoin the Nats, though he certainly made the opportunity count, launching a 431-foot homer off Ranger Suarez in the first inning. Garrett slashed .249/.348/.333 with just three home runs in 79 games with Triple-A Rochester this season after batting .269 with an .800 OPS in 268 plate appearances with the Nats last year.

Stat Review
How does Stone Garrett compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA

He has performed well when given the opportunity, boasting an .813 OPS (123 OPS+) through 355 total major-league plate appearances, but Garrett appears to be more of a placeholder in Washington as opposed to a building block. With top outfield prospects James Wood and Dylan Crews on the cusp of reaching the majors, Garrett could be traded or moved into a bench role by the middle of the 2024 campaign. Even if he does manage to hang on to a starting job for an extended period, his flaws will eventually be exposed as the sample size grows. The 28-year-old former eighth-round pick of the Marlins owns an ugly 30.7 strikeout percentage in the bigs, and his career .366 BABIP suggests he's been the beneficiary of some really good luck. In addition, he might have to be eased into action this spring after suffering a fractured left fibula last August.
Garrett finally made it to the major leagues in 2022 after spending nine seasons in the minors while a member of the Miami and Arizona organizations only to be designated for assignment by Arizona in mid November. Garrett did a good job in finding a new home in Washington with a one year deal as he has a chances for playing time there with the outfield rotation mostly up in the air. Garrett has both raw speed and power, but has also been a rather free swinger throughout his minor league career rarely accepting walks while frequently striking out. The Nationals are not going anywhere in 2023, so they can afford to see if this toolset can somehow work at the big league level or if it is easily replaceable. Draft and hold or very deep NL leagues can consider him post 23rd round, but this feels like one part reward to five parts risk.
Garrett, the top pop-up prospect in the Marlins’ system last year, burst onto the scene with a well-rounded offensive showing in the New York-Penn League. An eighth round pick in the 2014 draft, it was difficult to expect much from the toolsy center fielder after a lackluster showing in rookie ball. However, in his second season Garrett was assigned to the Batavia Muckdogs where he abused short season pitchers to the tune of 11 homers, eight steals, and a .933 OPS in 247 plate appearances. His speed is actually believed to be a tick ahead of his power, so it will be interesting to see what counting stats he produces against full-season pitching. His 2015 season was cut short by a wrist contusion, but he should begin 2016 at Low-A and has already established himself as one of the top dynasty league options in Miami’s barren farm system.

ANALYSIS
Garrett mashed in Triple-A for Arizona this season, hitting .275 with 28 home runs and 96 RBI through 103 games. The 26-year-old could speculatively earn a role on the big-league roster next season if he maintains a hot stretch to close 2022.
