2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hernaiz made the Athletics' Opening Day roster last season and was carving out a regular role when he went down with a severely sprained ankle in early May which sidelined him for nearly three months. The 23-year-old never gained any momentum at the plate either before or after the injury, ultimately finishing with a lowly .503 OPS which ranked 442nd out of 455 players to reach 100 plate appearances. Hernaiz has slashed .312/.376/.448 in 95 games at the Triple-A level, although his home venue in Las Vegas during that time was extremely hitter-friendly. While Hernaiz has solid plate discipline, he lacks power and he hasn't done much running since A-ball. Hernaiz could compete for the Athletics' third base job but appears best suited to be a utility infielder. Read Past Outlooks
Contributes as in-game replacement
Hernaiz entered Sunday's loss to the Mariners as a defensive replacement at third base in the seventh inning and went 1-for-1 with a two-run double.
ANALYSIS
Hernaiz made things interesting during his only plate appearance, doubling home Seth Brown and Zack Gelof in the ninth inning to slice a four-run deficit in half. The young infielder played only 48 games at the major-league level during his rookie 2024 campaign, with a near two-month stay on the injured list due to an ankle issue playing a large part. Hernaiz finished with just a .192 average and .503 OPS across 135 plate appearances; however, the combination of his adequate 8.1 percent walk rate and 20.0 percent strikeout rate in his first brush with big-league arms and his career .294/.358/.424 minor-league slash line imply he could certainly take a notable step forward if he remains healthy in 2025.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
It's too bad Hernaiz's context isn't better, because he's an underrated talent. His lack of impact speed, terrible home park and sub-standard teammates cap his ceiling, but he's a strong draft-and-hold target or AL-only bench option due to his floor and path to playing time. Hernaiz only hit nine home runs last year while stealing 13 bases, but he hit .321 with a 13.4 K%, 105.4 mph 90th percentile EV and a 112 mph maxEV (very good data for a 22-year-old shortstop). It wouldn't be surprising to see him hit .275 with 10 homers and 15 steals if he were in the big-league lineup for 135 games or so. The depth chart is wide open, with Nick Allen and Aledmys Diaz the only other shortstops on the roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Promotion could be on horizon
Robert Murray of FanSided.com speculates that Hernaiz could be the next prospect called up by the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old is one of Oakland's top prospects and was promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas in mid-July after opening the campaign with Double-A Midland, where he had an .872 OPS in 72 games. Hernaiz is hitting even better at Triple-A with a .351/.419/.526 slash line through 129 plate appearances. Fellow prospect Zack Gelof has impressed at second base in his first taste of the majors this summer, but Nick Allen's .518 OPS at shortstop leaves the door open for Hernaiz to make his MLB debut down the stretch.
