Howard earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod in 2022 despite playing through groin injuries all season, but those accolades don't overshadow the decline in play from a cornerback meant to be one of the league's few true lockdown options. If Howard can return to All-Pro levels, or something close to it when back to full health, pairing him with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and new teammate Jalen Ramsey should guarantee Miami one of the most dominant secondaries in the NFL. Though neither Howard nor Ramsey were statistically themselves in last season there's bounce-back potential for them in 2023.

Abruptly retires Wednesday
Howard informed the Colts of his decision to retire Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran cornerback was criticized for his play against the Rams' Puka Nacua in Indianapolis' Week 4 loss on Sunday, when he was listed as the nearest defender on seven of Matthew Stafford's completions, which netted 112 yards and a touchdown. Howard was then listed as absent from practice Wednesday due to a personal matter. That issue has now been clarified, and in an Instagram post explaining his rationale, Howard cited his desire to put family first as the impetus for his sudden retirement decision.
