The Buccaneers released Gregory (personal) on Sunday, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gregory failed to report to training camp in late July, which prompted Tampa Bay to place the veteran pass rusher on the reserve/did not report list. Head coach Todd Bowles said Sunday that he never received a reason for Gregory's absence, though the 2015 second-rounder continues to be involved in a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL due to a $500,000 fine he received in 2023 for the use of THC. Gregory appeared in 12 regular-season games for the 49ers last season and registered 11 tackles (10 solo), including 2.5 sacks.

Gregory's first year in Denver was mostly a disappointment. The veteran appeared in just six games and ended the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury after totaling 12 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. Gregory is now healthy ahead of the 2023 campaign, and his skills as a pass rusher should provide a significant boost to an already formidable defensive unit.
The Broncos acquired Gregory in free agency this offseason, as the 29-year-old signed a five-year, $70 million deal with the franchise. Gregory will help provide a boost to the team's pass rush in 2022, coming off a solid year with the Cowboys in which he recorded 19 tackles, six sacks and three forced fumbles. Heading into the coming season, Gregory will focus on his recovery from a left knee surgery undergone in January and a rotator cuff issue in his shoulder. Assuming he's healthy, he should find success as a disruptive pass rusher in the Broncos' defensive scheme.
Gregory hasn't played a snap in an NFL game since the end of the 2016 season, as multiple drug suspensions put his career in serious jeopardy. Reinstated by the league this offseason, the 25-year-old still shows flashes of the pass-rushing talent that had him initially projected as a top-10 pick in the 2015 draft before his first failed drug test. If he can stay on the straight and narrow, Gregory could prove to be a useful complement to DeMarcus Lawrence on the Cowboys' defensive line, but given the long layoff it's tough to project him as anything more than a rotational player.
The issues with marijuana use that caused Gregory to fall into the second round of the 2014 draft continue to be a problem for him, and what was originally set to be a four-game suspension to begin this season could be lengthened further due to yet another failed drug test. The Cowboys' desperate need for a pass rush will likely grant him another couple of chances to prove he can make some sort of contribution, but first he'll need to clean up his act and commit to his career. A Von Miller-like redemption story is still possible for Gregory, but time is running out for him to get it underway.
Gregory slipped out of the first round of the 2015 draft after a positive drug test at the Scouting Combine, but still projects to be one of the better pass rushers in his class if he can avoid further trouble. His IDP upside could be limited as he competes for snaps behind DeMarcus Lawrence and Greg Hardy, but Gregory still has the disruptive speed and talent to pick up a handful of sacks as a rookie

Absent from minicamp
LBTampa Bay Buccaneers
June 11, 2024
Gregory was not at the first day of mandatory minicamp Tuesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Most players not in attendance for mandatory minicamp are seeking a contract extension, though that isn't the case for Gregory, as he signed a one-year contract worth up to $5 million with the Buccaneers this offseason. The reason behind his absences aren't officially known, though Gregory has a pending lawsuit against the NFL regarding a $500,000 fine he received for using THC with a prescription. Assuming he returns to the field, Gergory should work as a pass-rush specialist.
