Johnny Mundt

30-Year-Old Tight EndTE
Minnesota Vikings
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mundt could serve as Minnesota's top pass-catching tight end for a significant portion of 2024 if he's able to beat out Josh Oliver and Robert Tonyan, as T.J. Hockenson tore his ACL in Week 16 last season and figures to miss the start of the upcoming campaign. Oliver's role didn't change much after Hockenson's injury, while Mundt stepped up with nine catches for 96 yards and one touchdown on 13 targets in two games (after having only eight catches for 76 yards prior to that point). That two-game sample was encouraging, but Mundt has just 405 yards and two touchdowns in an NFL career that has spanned seven seasons and 81 games. Read Past Outlooks

Mundt had two receptions for 22 yards, including a four-yard touchdown, on two targets in Sunday's win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mundt got slightly increased playing time with Josh Oliver out with an ankle injury. He played on 22 of the offense's 53 snaps while starter T.J. Hockenson played on 34 snaps. While Hockenson is clearly the top tight end, Mundt has two targets inside the 10-yard line while Hockenson has none since he returned from a knee injury. That trend could be a fluke, but Mundt at least offers some touchdown hope despite minimal usage (five targets in five games since Hockensen returned).

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
2021
After playing his first five seasons with the Rams, Mundt moved on to Minnesota in 2022 and accumulated 140 yards and one touchdown on 19 receptions across 21 games. He is competing for a backup role behind T.J. Hockenson in the 2023 campaign.
Mundt will compete with Ben Ellefson, Nick Muse and Zach Davidson for the No. 2 tight end role. All four backups are seen as mostly blockers, so the Vikings would likely reduce the tight end's role in the passing game if starter Irv Smith were to miss regular season games. Still, it's worth watching Mundt's development in the preseason, as offensive coordinator Wes Phillips suggested Mundt has untapped potential as a pass catcher.
This will be Mundt's fifth season with the Rams after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2017. While he's caught just nine passes through his first four years with the team, Mundt suited up for all 16 games in 2020 and could see an increased role with the departure of Gerald Everett to Seattle via free agency. Still, Mundt's likely to be deployed primarily as a blocker, so it's probably best to take a wait-and-see approach in all fantasy settings.

Getting more run with Smith out
TEMinnesota Vikings
August 7, 2022
Mundt has seen more first-team reps while Irv Smith recovers from thumb surgery, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
"I'm getting a lot more reps in practice," Mundt said of the impact of Smith's absence, adding that he has built up chemistry with Kirk Cousins and Minnesota's other quarterbacks, especially in third-down situations. Smith is expected to be back by Week 1, but if he's unable to meet that timeline, Mundt could open the season as the Vikings' top tight end after spending the previous five seasons in a depth role with the Rams.
