Replaces injured Kittle on Sunday
TESan Francisco 49ers
January 11, 2026
Tonges caught one of three targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 23-19 wild-card win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
After top tight end George Kittle exited the game in the second quarter with what is believed to be a torn Achilles tendon, the 49ers opened up more playing time for Tonges to begin the second half. Tonges has operated as San Francisco's third tight end on the depth chart for most of the season, but he's leapfrogged blocking specialist Luke Farrell whenever Kittle has missed time. The 25-year-old Tonges proved to be a viable receiving threat when called upon, averaging 4.8 receptions and 44.8 yards with three touchdowns scored in the six games that Kittle was inactive during the regular season. Assuming he's called upon to replace Kittle in the divisional-round matchup versus the Seahawks next weekend, Tonges should make a fine value play in DFS.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
After spending the entire 2023 campaign hidden on San Francisco's practice squad, Tonges was a surprise addition to the 49ers' 2024 53-man roster. With 2023 third-round pick Cameron Latu latching on with Cleveland in the aftermath, the 2022 UDFA out of the University of California leapfrogged up the depth chart to become one of George Kittle's primary backups. With just one official target and no receptions in his first two years in the NFL, we may finally get a glimpse of how Tonges operates as backup tight end in Kyle Shanahan's complex offensive scheme.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
TE1 with Kittle done for playoffs
TESan Francisco 49ers
January 11, 2026
Tonges is set to work as the 49ers' top tight end for the remainder of the playoffs, as head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after Sunday's 23-19 playoff win over the Eagles that George Kittle tore his Achilles during the game, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
Tonges stepped up in the six games Kittle missed due to injuries during the regular season, catching 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns in those games. With Kittle ruled out for the rest of the postseason, Tonges is set to take on an expanded role, starting with a trip to Seattle in the NFC divisional round to face a Seahawks defense that was comparatively worse at guarding tight ends than wide receivers and running backs in the regular season.
