Taken in the seventh round in 2023, McBride never got elevated from the practice squad last year by the Vikings, but some patience is to be expected given his potential. The UAB product has the size, power and elusiveness to develop into an early-down option in the NFL, but a lack of pass-catching skills and ball security issues in college hurt his draft stock. Minnesota brought in Aaron Jones this offseason, but only on a one-year deal. If McBride takes a step forward in his development, he could become a big part of the team's 2025 backfield plans. Back on Vikings' practice squad
McBride signed with Minnesota's practice squad Wednesday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2023 seventh-round pick spent all of 2023 on the Vikings' practice squad and did not see any NFL action. McBride entered training camp competing for a depth spot in the backfield, but Minnesota opted to keep just two running backs -- Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler -- on the 53-man roster. McBride could be promoted to the active roster should Jones or Chandler miss time, but it's not guaranteed due to the Vikings also signing Myles Gaskin to the taxi squad.

McBride has a narrow path to fantasy viability as a rookie seventh-round pick, but he got some help in June when Dalvin Cook was released. Even so, Alexander Mattison is the new starter and Minnesota has two other recent Day 3 picks (Kene Nwangwu, Ty Chandler) to compete for backup roles. Mattison is more reliable than explosive, which is the angle McBride can exploit. McBride posted rare numbers at UAB, running for 3,523 yards and 36 touchdowns on 484 carries (7.3 YPC) in 31 games. No doubt McBride is dangerous with the football. The question is whether he can earn snaps, considering he caught only five passes throughout his college career and fumbled 11 times in two years as the lead back. Chandler, a 2022 fifth-round pick, has 4.38 speed but got only six carries (no targets) last year, and Nwangwu, a 2021 fourth-round pick, has 28 touches in two years. Neither is a formidable challenge to McBride being the backup.
