Chicago Bears
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Kmet finished between seventh and ninth among tight ends last season in targets (90), catches (73) and receiving yards (719), and he was even more involved near the end zone, ranking fifth in red-zone targets (15) and tied for second with six TDs. Rookie first overall pick Caleb Williams is expected to be an instant upgrade for the passing game compared to Justin Fields, but Chicago also beefed up its receiving corps by trading for Keenan Allen and drafting Rome Odunze ninth overall, likely dropping Kmet a couple spots on the totem pole after he was second on the team in targets behind DJ Moore last season. The Bears even added a luxury signing in TE Gerald Everett, who won't take Kmet's starting job but could poach some of the snaps in clear passing situations. The 6-foot-6 Kmet has 13 touchdowns over the past two seasons after scoring only twice through his first two campaigns, and maintaining that prominent red-zone usage will be key to counteracting the influx of target competition. Kmet broke his forearm in the 2023 season finale, but he's never missed a game and came back healthy for OTAs this spring. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Kmet showed up on the Bears' first Week 5 practice report Wednesday as limited due to a knee injury, but he was able to handle a full allotment of reps one day later, effectively clearing him ahead of Sunday's game against the Panthers. Aside from a 10-97-1 showing on 11 targets Week 3 at Indianapolis, he's combined for eight catches (on nine targets) for 65 yards and no touchdowns in his other three outings this season.

2020
Kmet displayed promising chemistry with quarterback Justin Fields down the stretch in 2022, scoring seven touchdowns over the last 10 games to end a 28-game TD drought dating back to his rookie season. His red-zone targets actually dipped from 15 in 2021 to 10 in 2022, but Kmet scored six times on those 10 chances. The 6-foot-6 tight end’s success in the red zone made up for lackluster usage otherwise, as his target count dropped from 93 in 2021 to 69 last season in a Bears offense that ran the ball a league-high 56.2 percent of the time. His receiving yardage also dipped, from 612 to 544, though the latter mark was enough to lead the team last year. Kmet is 24 years old and hasn’t missed a game since Chicago drafted him 43rd overall in 2020, but the jury is still out on Fields as a passer, and there's more competition for the QB's attention after the Bears traded for three-time 1,100-yard receiver DJ Moore this offseason.
Kmet saw plenty of volume last season, but the sophomore tight end was often not on the same page with rookie quarterback Justin Fields. While Kmet’s 93 targets tied for eighth at the position, he finished outside the top 10 in catches (60) and yards (612), averaging a paltry 6.6 yards per target. Most damningly, the 6-6 tight end did not score despite being targeted 14 times in the red zone. Kmet is due for positive regression near the goal line, and Fields is certainly more likely to improve than regress as a passer in his second season, so there is reason for limited optimism. Kmet also has a clear path to targets, as the Bears do not have much besides wide receiver Darnell Mooney, after settling for Byron Pringle and third-round pick Velus Jones as potential replacements for wideout Allen Robinson, who signed with the Rams this offseason. Plus, Kmet is not likely to be challenged by any of the tight ends on the depth chart. If nothing else, he has a chance to be one of the most frequently targeted tight ends in the league.
Kmet didn't score his first TD at Notre Dame until his junior year, but he finished the 2019 season with 515 yards and six scores, setting up an early declare. His stock rose further after the 2020 Scouting Combine, where Kmet put up a 4.70 40 and 37.5-inch vertical at 6-6, 262, later going 43rd overall to a team that had signed Jimmy Graham a month earlier. The rookie played 70-plus percent of snaps in seven consecutive games to close out last season, but it never led to meaningful receiving output, even when he averaged 6.0 targets Weeks 13-17. Despite the lack of production, it was a respectable showing for a 21-year-old rookie at a position with a steep learning curve. Kmet isn't the most polished receiver, nor the most agile, but he's big and fast, and might be the youngest starting TE in the league. Unfortunately, Kmet's breakout appeal for 2021 takes a big hit if Graham remains on the roster, as the 34-year-old likely would poach some high-value snaps on third downs and in the red zone.
Immediately after spending a second-round draft pick on Kmet, making him the first tight end selected this year, GM Ryan Pace noted that Kmet will be the inline (blocking) tight end while Jimmy Graham serves as the receiving option. In any case, tight ends selected after the first round of the NFL Draft very rarely have much fantasy value in their first season, and especially those who are ticketed to be blockers. Of course, the fact that Kmet may be close to a full-time player could lead to him getting a few targets each week, and there's a scenario where he scores a few touchdowns when the Bears are in their goal-line offense. Despite the possibility of the rookie seeing some production, it's very difficult to imagine a scenario in which he's a top-20 tight end option in fantasy leagues this year.

Gets quality competition in Tonyan
TEChicago Bears
March 16, 2023
Kmet gained formidable competition for snaps and targets at tight end Thursday when Robert Tonyan agreed to a one-year deal with the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Kmet saw a slight downturn in receptions and yardage from his career-best 2021 campaign last season, finishing with 50 catches for 544 yards after compiling a 60-612 line the year prior. However, the 2020 second-round pick did record seven touchdowns after being blanked in that category in 2021, and he's yet to miss a game through his first three NFL seasons. Nevertheless, Tonyan posted 50-plus-reception seasons with the Packers in both 2020 and 2022 -- he suited up for only eight games in 2021 due to a torn ACL -- so Kmet could see a hit to his overall snap and target share in the coming season.
