Staying in New Orleans
Edwards-Helaire signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire started the 2024 season on the Chiefs' reserve/non-football illness list. He was activated from the NFI list Oct. 15 but was a healthy scratch for the next nine games and was ultimately waived by Kansas City in mid-December. He signed with the Saints' practice squad two days later and was elevated for the final two games of the regular season, during which he logged 13 carries for 46 yards while adding three catches (on five targets) for 24 yards. By signing a future contract, Edwards-Helaire will be on the Saints' 90-man roster for the start of the new league year March 12. He'll be able to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp and will look to earn a spot on New Orleans' 53-man roster for the 2025 season.

2020
Edwards-Helaire has seen his stock collapse since being a 2020 first-round pick, but the Chiefs used him some down the stretch last year and then brought him back on a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired. At this point, he mostly seems to be valued for his familiarity with Andy Reid's offense and competent receiving skills. Edwards-Helaire even dropped to 3.2 yards per carry on 70 attempts last year, after averaging either 4.4 or 4.3 YPC each of his first three seasons. He's no threat to Isiah Pacheco, who took over as the lead back as a rookie in 2022 and then improved considerably in 2023. Any chance for Edwards-Helaire to be useful in fantasy leagues depends on Pacheco suffering an injury, though there could be a surprising degree of value in that case, as the Chiefs offense is usually among the league's best and has little else in the way of backfield depth.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely to be more involved Week 18
Edwards-Helaire is likely to be elevated from the practice squad again in Week 18 and could lead the Saints backfield against the Buccaneers after Kendre Miller suffered a concussion during Sunday's 25-10 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire led the Saints with five carries in his team debut against the Raiders, while Miller got three before getting injured and Jamaal Williams rushed only twice. If Alvin Kamara doesn't return from a groin injury and Miller can't clear concussion protocol, the Saints would likely roll with a committee approach featuring Edwards-Helaire, Williams and Jordan Mims, the latter of whom was inactive against the Raiders.
