Sees action in second half Sunday
Edwards-Helaire logged four carries for six yards and caught his lone target for nine yards during Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire logged all four of his carries in the third quarter. He didn't get a chance to tote the rock until after Kendre Miller, Velus Jones and Cam Akers all logged rushing attempts in the first half. New Orleans was also without sixth-round rookie Devin Neal (hamstring) on Sunday. Once Neal is healthy, Edwards-Helaire will likely be left on the outside looking in at the depth chart. His next chance to play this preseason will come Sunday, Aug. 17 against Jacksonville.

Edwards-Helaire has seen his stock collapse since being a 2020 first-round pick, but the Chiefs used him some down the stretch last year and then brought him back on a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired. At this point, he mostly seems to be valued for his familiarity with Andy Reid's offense and competent receiving skills. Edwards-Helaire even dropped to 3.2 yards per carry on 70 attempts last year, after averaging either 4.4 or 4.3 YPC each of his first three seasons. He's no threat to Isiah Pacheco, who took over as the lead back as a rookie in 2022 and then improved considerably in 2023. Any chance for Edwards-Helaire to be useful in fantasy leagues depends on Pacheco suffering an injury, though there could be a surprising degree of value in that case, as the Chiefs offense is usually among the league's best and has little else in the way of backfield depth.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Joined by another 2020 Draft RB
Edwards-Helaire's path to securing a roster spot became more difficult Friday, as Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports that the Saints signed Cam Akers to a one-year contract.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire and Akers are unlikely to both make the 53-man roster, as the Saints will presumably keep one or both of the younger Kendre Miller and Devin Neal in addition to starter Alvin Kamara. Both Edwards-Helaire and Akers have failed to live up to lofty expectations coming out of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire has seen his regular-season rushing yard total drop with each subsequent campaign since his 803-yard rookie season, while Akers has suffered two torn Achilles tendons and peaked at 786 rushing yards in the 2022 regular season.
