2025 Fantasy Outlook
Size-adjusted athleticism is generally an important variable when evaluating NFL running back prospects, so despite excellent production in college it was a major strike to Irving's draft stock when he logged poor workout numbers last spring at just 192 pounds (4.55-second 40, 29.5-inch vertical, 115-inch broad jump). There are exceptions to every rule, though, and while other running backs might have failed with his athletic profile, there's something unique about Irving that allows him to transcend the otherwise concerning indicators in his testing. His strong skill set was always clear at the collegiate level, where he stood out for both Minnesota and Oregon before the Buccaneers made him a fourth-round pick last spring. The main limitation with Irving pertains to his usage upside rather than his per-touch effectiveness. Playing at 192 pounds hasn't deprived Irving of the power necessary to thrive between the tackles, but it remains to be seen whether he can physically hold up as a workhorse. Irving went over 20 carries in a game just twice in college, so it might be asking a lot for him to maintain the rushing workload he shouldered in his final six healthy games of 2024 (18.8 carries per game). Won't return Week 8
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Irving (foot) will not suit up for Sunday's road matchup against the Saints, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Irving won't practice Wednesday or be a candidate to return Week 8, but it would at least be encouraging to see him resume handling limited reps at some point before Tampa Bay's bye in Week 9. Versus New Orleans, Rachaad White will be slated to draw another start, while Sean Tucker will likely handle No. 2 reps. Irving's next opportunity to retake the field will come Sunday, Nov. 9 versus the Patriots in Week 10.

Irving is a skilled player, both as a runner and receiver, and he was highly productive at both Minnesota and Oregon. The question of his NFL viability is less certain, as Irving tumbled to the fourth round of the 2024 Draft after posting disappointing numbers at the combine. Fellow former Pac-12 back Myles Gaskin could be a cautionary tale -- Gaskin was an exceptionally productive four-year player at Washington, yet in the NFL a lack of power and speed has caught up to him. Following a 4.55-second 40 time at 192 pounds, Irving heads to the NFL with some of the same concerns. He's unlikely to challenge incumbent starter Rachaad White in any meaningful way, but Irving could earn a change-of-pace role in an offense that otherwise lacks backfield talent.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Week 8 absence confirmed
Irving, who's missed the last three games due to foot and shoulder injuries, is already confirmed for a fourth consecutive absence in Week 8 against the Saints, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Irving's pair of injuries have been more significant than originally feared, as Sunday's absence will officially guarantee he'll miss more than a month of calendar time. The second-year back is expected to be continue to be spelled by Rachaad White and Sean Tucker in the divisional road clash against New Orleans, and there's a chance Irving is able to return after the Buccaneers' Week 9 bye.
