The Vikings still value Aaron Jones, but their trade for Mason -- who then signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract -- suggests the team wants to utilize power-running concepts that don't suit Jones. At 5-foot-11, 223 pounds, Mason is a classic hammer between the tackles, complementing the lighter and more fragile Jones, who nonetheless figures to remain Minnesota's primary runner between the 20s. The closer Minnesota gets to scoring range, the more Mason's appeal should become apparent. Mason went undrafted out of Georgia Tech back in 2022, but he might have made more of a name for himself if not for then-teammate Jahmyr Gibbs stealing the spotlight. Mason's NFL production only lends credence to the idea that he was a quality player all along, with 236 career carries yielding 1,253 yards (5.3 YPC) and seven touchdowns, including 685 rushing yards and three TDs in Weeks 1-8 of 2024 when he filled in for an injured Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco. Mason appears fully recovered from the high-ankle sprain that forced him to miss the final five regular-season games of his breakout 2024 campaign in San Francisco. The 26-year-old impressed out of the gate last year with Christian McCaffrey unavailable for the 49ers, rushing 134 times for 685 yards (5.1 YPC) and three scores during the team's first eight games, before injuries of his own popped up. Aaron Jones inked a two-year extension with Minnesota this offseason and still projects as the team's starter, but in the interest of keeping the 30-year-old fresh, Mason will be a candidate to push for a significant backfield split. Boasting a far larger frame at 5-foot-11, 223 pounds, Mason also seems the favorite for short-yardage and goal-line work.

No player better represents the idea that just about any running back can thrive in Kyle Shanahan's offense than Mason. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022, Mason has averaged 5.6 yards per carry for the 49ers, and while he lacks breakaway speed, his power and sheer refusal to go down have resulted in some impressive yards after contact in a small sample. The 49ers backfield seemingly got more crowded this offseason when they drafted Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round, but it ended up working out well for Mason when Guerendo and Elijah Mitchell both missed most of training camp with injuries. Mitchell was then place on season-ending injured reserve in late August, leaving Mason as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey to start the season.
